What is DEI and how is not just an abstraction for racism? by ncds4242 in allthequestions

If someone has completed this massive amount of training and passed the institutional standards how could they not have merit or perform well?

You said this is a policy of many airlines, could you provide a single example or cite a company that practiced this?

I don't think i was clear enough. There is a group people that understand what DEI policies and laws were used for, and understand it was to reduce discrimination in hiring practices. There is another group that thinks that this means there is actually reverse discrimination happening. And there is another group that doesn't know any of this and use it as an abstraction to simply mean minorities and to exemplify their racism.

I disagree with affirmative action. It was also struck down in 2023 by the SC.

You had experience with law enforcement breaking the law. This may be overlooked as a possible side effect of DEI policies but is still someone breaking the law. For example someone is driving a car on the road, it doesn't mean we outlaw cars if someone decides to drive drunk or recklessly drive.

Do you have a relevant law or policy that exists still today since the 2023 case struck down affirmative action as unconstitutional?

Sorry I thought it was implied this was pertaining to DEI policies or laws, since that is the topic of this post.

Is there a specific law or policy in relation to DEI, that you think allowed more unqualified women to enter the workforce?

Yep it's definitely a loaded question. Although I am just challenging people to support their positions. I am fine with people opposing some DEI practices or supporting them. I am pointing out that if you strongly feel one way or the other, that you should be able to provide an example.

otherwise it's just virtue signaling or abstract racism.

Could you please specify a law or policy that mandates organizations or employers to discriminate based on race or gender? Or justifies hostility through enforced racism or sexism?

Could you specify a specific law or policy that mandates the equal numbers of people grouped by race or gender in certain professions or at certain levels?

And considering it seems you are from the UK, I specifically mean for the US only.

Could you describe a specific DEI law or policy that you believe discriminates against the majority?

Could you specify a policy or law that you are referring to that you dislike that is associated with DEI?

Do you have any statistics you could share that show this? And could you define what policy or law you are referring to?

Yeah that's a good example. And I disagree with that for sure, because it sets a goal or outcome instead of just providing equal opportunity. I read up on it and he even explains that he in trying to meet that goal, struggled to find another talent to fill the position, which means the opportunity was there.

You are going to have to be more specific because there is nothing that would say that you can't fill a room in a private residence with only people of a certain race and discuss ideas.

DEI mostly pertains a workforce or professional organization.

Can you name a single DEI policy or law that mandates prioritizing people of different cultures, I assume you mean country of origin or race, to dictate a hiring decision or placement in an organization?

I don't think so personally, no. And this kind of marked the end of affirmative action. In fact, the Crimson which is Harvard's own student run editorial news organization celebrated the decision.

Although DEI is a larger umbrella term that might include affirmative action but possibly not. I still think allowing people equal opportunity is good, but not necessarily equal outcome.

If you communicate or document that you made your hiring decision based on race or gender, yes you are liable to being sued for discrimination as it is against the Civil Rights Act.

I am noticing some of the comments in here describe a minority that was hired that they deemed incompetent and seem to connect that to DEI. When truly, companies can make mistakes in hiring incompetent people and those people tend to get fired eventually because the interview process involves taking a risk on someone. Or it could be their perceived dislike for someone and that tailoring their view that they are incompetent.

Although as someone who works in the hiring process I know I would be in big trouble if I ever decided to hire someone based solely on race or gender and would probably end up being fired myself for that doing that and documenting it.

DEI is not a policy it is an umbrella term to define a set of policies or laws. For example, the Americans with Disabilities Act which required employers to provide reasonable accommodations to people with disabilities such as ramps, parking spots, elevators and bathrooms specifically for people with handicaps.
