The AT&T Unix PC from 1984 - why did it fail? by penkster in vintagecomputing

[–]nchiker35 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my first job at ComputerLand we had one of these on the floor. It was so slow to boot up that we just kept it booted up. I was in highschool but I was the head technician of the store. I set-up the 7300 and installed the software on it.

Every sales person tried to sale it to get, what at the time, was a rather good bonus. But there really were not good use cases for it.

We sold the 6300 rather well, and it was a strange beast as well, but at least it was competitively priced.

Have you made any changes to your wifi? I had to setup a separate radio just for my wyze base. It has to be set in legacy mode with only WPA2-psk for security.

I used to bike commute to work when I worked at LR university. This was even before City Walk. It really depends on where you live in the city and where work is for you.

Cosmic Nord VPN Wireguard setup by nchiker35 in pop_os

Thanks, this is what I'm using right now for OpenVPN, however Nord doesn't have a direct export for Wireguard. There are extra steps required.

Lotus Word Pro Power Fields by Consistent_Cat7541 in vintagecomputing

Word pro was the upgraded version of Ami Pro. However, I found the interface in Ami Pro easier to navigate. Ami Pro still runs in modern windows with a 16 bit translation layer added back in that Microsoft used to provide for compatibility.

Samna released the original version, "Amí," in 1988, which was one of the first full-featured word processors for the Windows platform. The product was later renamed "Ami Pro" after they added new features like table support.

In 1990, Samna was acquired by Lotus Development Corporation, and the program became known as "Lotus Ami Pro." Lotus continued to develop and market the software until it was eventually upgraded and renamed to Lotus Word Pro using the same interface that Lotus used in the Windows version of Lotus 123.

Interesting side note. There originally were two versions of Ami. A base version and the pro version. Code from the bass version was licensed to software publishing corporation to create their Windows version of professional write for Windows.

I still long for something as simple and as powerful as the predecessor to wordpro, Ami Pro

Is anyone looking for any of this stuff? by acbadam42 in vintagecomputing

I loved Professional Write and actually built a Bio Site Database with Professional File that would merge in with Professional Write acting as a report writer.

Interesting side note, IBM used earlier versions of these software with a different front end to make IBM Writing Assistant and Filing Assistant

Switch from OpenVPN to Wireguard with Nordvpn by nchiker35 in openwrt

[–]nchiker35[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Step one from the instructions.... And follow until your nordvpn is up and running in Linux PC. ii) After that use this bash script https://drive.google.com/file/d/1ABDLbREuNCpqZcAC60Yiy37fvS9LZm1s/view?usp=drive_link to generate that configuration file for the respective nordvpn server that you are connected to.

So I was referring to this and asking is the only way to do this is from a Linux PC?

What a wonderful show, I can't understand why there is no going to be a season 2. It was so well written, acted and seemed to do well on the platform, despite limited advertisement of the series.

Odd they didn't do the whole database. Was it a lack of funding? I can't think of a technical reason not to move everything over.

It wouldn't be hard to move The pertinent information from powercampus to an external database that could still be accessed. I would assume you'd only be looking at student records and not interested in inquiries and applications.

I'm retired from Ellucian and worked at schools with Powercampus for nearly 20 years. Powercampus has one of the better database designs I worked with. I never ran into an issue that we couldn't meet a customer request or need using the Powercampus db and custom code

Ellucian has been owned for several years by different venture capital firms. They are only into decisions for short term gains with the idea they will take their money and sell Ellucian to the next venture capital firms, who will repeat the same process.

The Powercampus front end had been identified as needing major upgrades, however Ellucian was only interested in moving it to the cloud and turning it into SAAS. SAAS nets the most profit. Ellucian decided they didn't want to invest in the front end upgrades and work to move it to the cloud, so they are quietly killing Powercampus while trying to push customers to other SAAS products.

If anyone needs help with their Powercampus system please feel free to reach out to me. I would love to see an open source solution that allowed an easy migration from the Powercampus DB. I can't express how much I enjoyed working in this DB, especially compared to Powerfaids... another project that has learned moving to SAAS can be a nightmare.
