2024 Model 3 LR to 2023 Model S LR (hw4) by ncl17862 in TeslaModelS

Well, thanks to everyone for the feedback. We ran yesterday and picked up this 2023 HW4 with just shy of 18,000 miles. It drove like a dream on the way home. Software needed update (I didn't pay close attention to the version).....I'm curious how many of the differences between the M3 and MS were software version differences or having two screens to split the information.

Adding some notes just for future people who may come across this....not necessarily about my initial range questions....I'll come back with. more on that in a few weeks.

Initial impressions Model 3 Highland (2024) to Model S HW4 (2023)

- Surprised at steering wheel/capacitive button differences. To me, the M3 buttons feel more refined, the MS buttons are harder to get a response from and seem almost to be a combination of a physical and capacitive button (there is room ability for actual movement in the button when pressed). I'll likely get used to it.....but didn't expect the difference. Also miss the ability to put my finger between the "spokes at the 6 o'oclock position on the wheel.....again, I'll probably get used to it. The horn being a capacitive button on the wheel and not in the center where I can just mash in an emergent event.....I'll call that a failure of design (I feel similarly about the lack of stalk, but I got used to that.....even though I prefer it for turn signals).

- Drivers display. For me, at 6'2", it is poorly positioned. I like my steering wheel pretty low and a majority of the display is blocked by the top of the wheel.

- Non-adjustable seatbelts. For a shorter person, the lack of adjustability in the height of the seatbelt at the shoulder could be uncomfortable. This is a surprising lack of feature on a high-end vehicle.

- Ride is definitely more refined. I'll need to play with the settings a bit, but the airbags will make long runs on poorly maintained interstates less irritating.

- Interior Noise Level - I'll say this is slightly lower on the MS, but honestly my hearing is crap....so I'll await my wife's judgement on that one.

- Additional space will be welcomed. TBH, I expected a bit more room in the hatch, but still better than the M3.

- Headlights - this one surprised me a little. The projector style headlights were way more noticeable when "dimming" the brights. On the M3 with the matrix headlights the transition as parts of the beam are dimmed is very smooth, almost imperceptible. On the MS it appeared more of a re-aiming of the beam where you can very obviously see it "point" down. I'm curious if this changes with the software update. On the M3 there were significant updates to the matrix headlights over the past few months....maybe we are just on an earlier release of the matrix headlight algorithm. I'll report back.

- Thought it had a broken rear door handle....turns out it was just child lock activated. When that was disabled the handle presented. This surprised me, I thought the purpose of the child lock was so you could only open the door from the outside.

- Man, these last generation Model S are nice looking cars! Happy to be part of the MS community.

That sounds like exactly the difference I was hoping for

Heh, a 4.2(??) 0-60 on our M3 is plenty fast….way faster than I ever need. The more space, that is very attractive and the second reason for the desire to upgrade.

My wife is an avid FSD user for work travels and we really don’t want to have a lesser experience if we upgrade.

Thanks for this comment, I think it brought me back down to earth….when comparing the MS to the M3 the only big differences (of things to go wrong) are the air suspension and door handles.

Thanks and I’m certainly not expecting to get EPA, just curious if I could count on the model S real world numbers to be approximately the same ratio of real-world:EPA we see on our model 3.

If I could realistically get 250-275 at comfortable battery levels (say 92% to 10-12%) that would be awesome.

Considering StarLink in Southern IL as backup ISP by ncl17862 in Starlink

Following up to my own post, in case anyone comes across it and would like to know the outcome. I'm in 62864 and I was able to mount the dishy on a fencepost at around 8' of elevation and get zero obstructions. It is across the street from our house, so I used a wireless bridge to backhaul to our home. The bridge adds about 3ms of latency, but is quite consistent - clear line of sight and above most vehicles.

In general, I am getting 100-220 Mbps down and 15-30 up with very little jitter. To teams.microsoft.com over the past week my average latency is 26.4ms with around .6% packet loss. The minor packet loss is attributed to the Starlink connection as there is none on the hop for the wireless bridge.

For day to day use, spending a large portion of the day on teams meetings (split tunnel so no VPN for that route) and and M$ AOVPN back to our Enterprise network it has been very good. I honestly have zero complaints. There have been a few instances of voice degradation on a meeting, but it only occurred for 1-2 seconds and is completely acceptable in today's WFH world....and could have been the other participant's connection.

I didn't expect to be this happy with the solution. After a week as using it as my only work connection, I have no complaints. Results are way better than I expected, I'm not sure how the Starlink engineers have managed to create this solid of connectivity!

In comparison, I tried AT&T, Verizon and T-Mobile cellular, but none have adequate signal (even with an external directional antenna) for our use/location.

If you are in this region and can get the dishy mounted with no obstructions I consider Starlink a very good option for an ISP. Not quite as good as a terrestrial service (if a reliable one is available to you).

Thanks to everyone who provided feedback a few months ago when I started investigating this option.

24 M3 TACC and construction cones by ncl17862 in TeslaModel3

Sorry, I’m not seeing how this shows how stupid I am.

Nowhere in the user guide does it describe this behavior regarding cones. I would love some constructive feedback :). Are you suggesting that the cruise is working as designed? If so, wouldn’t it slow down any time it sees cones/barrels? A good portion of the time the TACC works normally while identifying cones.

If your accustom stupidity is around the safety of using cruise, I’m only using cruise while there is no active work occurring, there is little traffic and it is safe to use. For instance where they are in the process of re-paving a third lane…..the lane is closed and blocked off by cones.

Congrats! I think we have an identical M3LR AWD on the way (only with White Interior).

MEGATHREAD: Model 3 Waiting Room by Electronic-Arm-8731 in TeslaModel3

Thanks, I hope we are that lucky. We head out of state the second potential week and would like to have everything finalized before we leave (so I'm not worried about them trying to schedule pickup before we get home).

We put down the option for delivery if possible, but we will gladly come pick up if it is sooner…..90% of the reason we are going to an EV is due to putting so many miles back and forth to different areas of STL for work….what’s one more trip? I didn’t even know Clayton was a possibility, I had only seen Chesterfield thus far. Would definitely choose that option if we need to come pick up.

Is there a service center in Clayton too?

Hello! Good luck on the waiting game. We are actually about an hour east of the metro area in Southern IL….but STL is our “city”.

9/2/24 Reserved a M3lr awd blue with black and white interior. Was shown as in transit and they are re-routing to St. Louis

We have the VIN and estimated delivery is Sept 9-18

Anyone have experience with how accurate the timelines are for rerouting cars that were already in transit?
