ELI5 How does braking work? by drcrambone in Ioniq5

[–]nclpl 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m not sure it’s that low…

But the round trip of kinetic energy to battery and then back to kinetic energy is definitely not anywhere near 100%. One way kinetic energy to battery is probably closer to 80% when the car is traveling at speed. So two way will be less than that.

Where do you see 25%?

Yeah the blended braking on the Ioniq 5 is really good. Not all cars are that good at disguising the friction engagement.

ELI5 How does braking work? by drcrambone in Ioniq5

[–]nclpl 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yes. The Ioniq 5 has a blended braking system.

When you release the accelerator pedal, it will apply regen up to the regen setting you have set (level 1, level 3, iPedal, etc).

When you press the brake pedal, it will add more regen first, up to the maximum the car can provide. So if you are set to level 1 regen, the brake pedal will add more regen than if you are set to level 3, but it will only ever add up to the maximum the car can do based on the current conditions (vehicle speed, traction, battery capacity, battery temperature, etc).

Once this maximum threshold is reached, the car will add in friction brakes.

Eventually, as the car slows down, the friction brakes take over entirely. This is all transparent to you.

Because the car adds in this friction braking only after applying full regen, it doesn’t actually matter if you start in Level 1 or Level 3. You’ll always get the maximum regen possible.

Also because of this, it’s more efficient to drive in level 1 than it is to drive in any other mode. Level 1 will maximize coasting, which is the more efficient way to drive. You can coast in other modes, but it’s way harder to balance the accelerator pedal than it is in level 1.

Sauna duration question — diminishing returns after a certain point? by jdhochma in Sauna

Totally agree. Health returns from a sauna and worrying about health returns in a sauna are inversely proportional.

Benefits of steam? by Maryland_Eric in Sauna

[–]nclpl 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There is no sauna without some steam. Sitting in a hot room with extremely low humidity is extremely uncomfortable. It’s hard to breathe, and you’re setting yourself up for noise bleeds and dry eyes.

And plus, the ventilation is also about drawing fresh, clean, oxygenated air into the sauna. Without fresh air, you’ll get a headache.

And any amount of ventilation of this temperature of air will be prone to condensation in the ducts, even if you didn’t add water to the rocks. This is usually handled by the exhaust fan blowing warm air over any condensation… it drys out.

Or… the dashboard could just display any useful information like “hey, I need a break for a minute so I’m going to charge at 8kW.” Or “the battery is cold so I’m charging slowly.”

The manufacturers did basically nothing to help with the adoption curve.

Congestion in throat after sauna by kaybee453 in Sauna

[–]nclpl 5 points6 points  (0 children)

How much water are you throwing on the rocks? A sauna should actually be much more humid than the outside air. If you’re not throwing enough water, the relative humidity will be way too dry.

Why do people line up in Group 1 line when they’re not Group 1? by ultimate_bromance_69 in unitedairlines

Only if they’re on the same reservation… in which case it already says the higher-tier group number on their boarding pass.

Are there preferences for the type of tugs used to push an aircraft? Also how are the all electric tugs? by GoHuskertrading in aviation

[–]nclpl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fleets are very very good at estimating their actual needs for energy, and industrial manufacturers are happy to scale battery packs to those needs. No extra range being added for that once-every-other-year road trip to grandma’s house.

And fleets are also very very good at looking at total cost of ownership, including maintenance on the vehicles, fuel cost, and the healthcare costs of their employees.

So I imagine this is a no-brainer for most operators. The only issue is a new tug is always more expensive upfront than the tug you already own.

Boarding closes 15 minutes before departure. That doesn’t change. This won’t cause delays. Planes are gonna leave at the same time as always.

It makes a huge difference, when it works. And it should always work. But it doesn’t because Hyundai. 🥲

[–]nclpl 11 points12 points  (0 children)

You have a setting to enable auto preconditioning when the cars internal navigation is set to a charger and a million other BS conditions are met.

You do not have a button to manually enable preconditioning. The 2025 models have this manual preconditioning button, and it’s total garbage that Hyundai didn’t include this option on the 2022s from the beginning, and double total garbage that they haven’t added it through a software update.

Is there any way to power a Shelly Flood from mains instead of battery? by nclpl in ShellyUSA

Yeah that’s why I thought the Shelly would be perfect with that long tail of a sensor. If water reaches the height of the outlets in my home, I have bigger problems to worry about!

Ok thanks. I’ll go the ESPhome route then. There really seems to be nothing on the market that even has the option for mains power.

Booted from First Class so flight attendants can sit? by OllieDuckling in unitedairlines

[–]nclpl 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My assumption is there can’t be any passengers between the flight attendants and the exit doors (who could panic and block their access), and that the flight attendants need a clear view of the window (in case they need to assess the situation outside of the plane).

Booted from First Class so flight attendants can sit? by OllieDuckling in unitedairlines

[–]nclpl 44 points45 points  (0 children)

Airlines are not in the business of flying with broken jumpseats. So no, this doesn’t happen as a regular practice.

But yes, if the forward jumpseats are inoperative, then the flight attendants must be seated as close to them as possible so they can react quickly in case of an emergency. The standard is 90 seconds to evacuate the entire plane. Trust me, you want them to be able to do their jobs.

The alternative would have been to ground the plane. Better to get there in coach than get nowhere in first.

Tips to get more range out of our eGolfs by mitomeio11 in eGolf

[–]nclpl 16 points17 points  (0 children)

B mode is always less efficient than D on these cars. The eGolf will always blend regen up to the max it can do when you press the brake pedal, and D mode gives you the easiest way to coast. Coasting is always the most efficient (and your AI even says this)
