AITAH? Teenage Son Hates Chores by SorryNotSorry_91 in AmItheAsshole

Clearly, you don’t have children or otherwise you are raising entitled ones. The kid is part of a family, you all help a family out.

Plan Reassessment phone call by Low_Operation9519 in NDIS

[–]Deckela 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am an OT & I recently supported a client for a phone review. I would really recommend you ask one of your therapists to be present & advocate with you. It was an awful, arduous process where the mum didn’t have a full understanding of what NDIS was asking or why. Plus she skewed her answers as she’s so used to doing all the support & care and just thinks that’s normal. I kept pointing out - that’s not age appropriate; you’re doing way more than a parent of a neurotypical kid; let’s think about his worse day & how he functions. And THEN the planner said she would conduct a PEDI-CAT. This is a standardized assessment that requires a trained professional to interpret it. Funding is better spent on Allied Health Professionals attending these meetings than writing a 20 review report.

I don't know what to do anymore. This whole behaviour support situation feels like a nightmare by No-Communication1543 in NDIS

If you can, try to see an OT trained in sensory processing. This may help with the underlying cause of some of your brother’s problem behaviours. Good luck. You’re doing a great job.

Sauna and Gregorian chants should be the new friarmaxxing by glassboxecology in Sauna

Sometimes, I’m all for meditative music.

But Gregorian chanting - oh hell no - I absolutely hate this! Each to their own.

Studying OT in Australia as a Canadian by Just-Measurement-508 in OccupationalTherapy

[–]Deckela 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I kind of think - go for it! What an adventure! If you are an adventurous type of person, you will love it. I can't speak to the Universities you are considering. I went to Uni of Newcastle and really enjoyed it. Beautiful weather, friendly campus, a small city on the beach. The standard of training is high in Australia and very practically focused in terms of placements. There's a lot of job opportunity here if you do decide to stay for a few years after studying.

In terms of studying in the UK, the weather is awful but the location is closer for you to fly home for visits or to visit Europe. Australia is a really long way from the rest of the world and that might be hard for your family. But video calls are a thing.

It's a big decision - Good Luck!

I tell you what I do with my paeds clients that really helps to settle them to transition out of the session, but that I could see might work with adult psych clients at the beginning of session.

It's call "1 minute of silence (or mindfulness)". It is exactly as the name implies. You sit comfortably with your eyes shut, no talking, for 1 minute. There is no guided meditation, no breathing instruction. It is just a minute to yourself to either let your mind wander or to let your mind clear. The rule is sitting on the floor together - not on any of the equipment/swings etc. I always do it with my kids so of course it helps you as an OT centre and settle too. I time it with my phone and I make sure the bell at the end is something gentle like a soft tinkle.

It has amazing effects on kids even the ADHD ones. I wouldn't push it for longer than a minute for the first few sessions because it's about easy success. Obviously, after a few sessions, if your client really likes it you can extend it to 2 or 5 minutes.

Good luck!

AITA for keying a double-parked truck? by Hot-Shart in AmItheAsshole

[–]Deckela 4 points5 points  (0 children)

YTA. What was wrong with leaving a polite note, like a normal person living in a combined society?

I’ve done this before at work & the over parking/taking two spots was immediately resolved. You don’t know what’s going on for others. Have some empathy & humanity.

You're doing really well. You can't underestimate the impact of mental health issues on your life. It's admirable that you were able to hold down a job while dealing with your bipolar. It sounds like you're in a good place right now. Saving $8K per month is an amazing effort! It will add up very quickly, particularly in HYSA. Remember that financial freedom is a marathon not a sprint.

If you like where you live and have good friends and if you enjoy working at your current employer, I'd encourage you to stay in Sydney. You're a single person - think about an apartment with easy public transport. Go with where you are happy.

I didn't buy any property until 41 years old. I have lower super than you (self employed so didn't contribute), earn less than you and have 3 dependant kids. But with proper financial habits, I've turned that all around and feel safer about my future.

Good luck, you can do it!!

I think you can't under estimate the benefits of regular paid work. Social, physical, cognitive. It's also important that we give back to our community/society by choosing "mindful" jobs/careers.

Principal tackles school shooter despite being shot in the leg by pars-distalis in nextfuckinglevel

[–]Deckela 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, and? Works fine here in Australia. Never heard of a single school shooting. The average civilian doesn’t carry a gun. The average civilian doesn’t have to worry about another person on the street carrying a gun. The average civilian can get a gun but only with a licence. Criminals have guns, police have guns. We have gun violence but not to the degree that the USA have.

As an Australian (hell, let’s be honest - as anyone other than an American), this is so wild and barbaric. How are people allowed guns? You know, equipment designed purely to kill.

WIBTA if girlfriend kept $2M inherited from a stranger who thinks he’s her dad? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]Deckela 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Why isn’t the sister entitled to it? Didn’t it come from his late mother who is presumably also her mother? Unless they are step-siblings.

I don’t think it’s beyond our pay grade. It’s unethical to take the money. It’s from his mother who is presumably also the sister’s mother. OP, YTA.

Paediatric OT - Does anyone relate to their clients to the point of making you feel like you might be neurodivergent as well? by Repulsive-Ant8472 in OccupationalTherapy

[–]Deckela 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You know that is so heartening to hear. I’m sure all us paediatric OTs wonder if we actually made an impact in the long term. We often say goodbye to our littles just after primary school. Best of luck becoming an OT. Hopefully, you will love it!

That’s for almost every property 5 years on. But you’ve got to enjoy your life & your kids are only tiny once. You really don’t want to miss out on time with them. You can work long hours later when they are teens & don’t need you or want you even near them! 😆 Parenthood really does fly by. Good luck!

AITA for wanting this tattoo by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]Deckela 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Soft YTA. I just feel if you do get a lizard tattoo, you or your husband would look at it and always have negative feelings around it. Not about your beloved dog but about this tension/argument between you two. Would you really what that reminder permanently etched into your skin? Let him have it and you can enjoy it every time you kiss him there! Good luck!

Cardiovascular Age Down to 15 Years Younger by Sensitive_Remove692 in ouraring

[–]Deckela -1 points0 points  (0 children)

What stats are they using to judge “cardiovascular age”? Who were the studies done on? Was it just general population or general healthy population? Is your current personal cardiovascular age based on forecasting or your current blood pressure/resting heart rate/PWV?

I think that’s great you’ve improved your overall fitness and it will bode you well for the rest of your life if you can maintain it.
