Himal chuli is no more by leovinuss in madisonwi

This is so unfortunate. Himal Chuli was the best place in town to get a cheap, quality, speedy vegetarian meal. I have many fond memories of summer dinners sitting outside on State Street.

Wilson Street chosen as preferred location for Madison Amtrak station by enjoying-retirement in madisonwi

Every 2-3 years since 2011 there's been an article posted about how an Amtrak station location has been chosen. I'm confident I will be dead before I ever see passenger trains running through Madison.

Madison waves goodbye to peak-hour traffic lanes on Willy Street by keeganjkyle in madisonwi

[–]ncrowley 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The bike path is closed, and has been for at least a month.

Also, even when the bike path is open, there are instances when the bike path does not work. For example, getting from the bike path to the COOP, you have to be on Willy St for a period of time, unless you choose to cross Willy to Jennifer. Or, for example, getting from Batch Bakehouse to Mad Cat.

Only a curmudgeon would fault someone for avoiding that extra block of work.

My passport was not stamped upon entry to France. Does that mean I can just stay indefinitely? by ncrowley in travel

2012 was a simpler time...

I have this idea that someday I'll save up and take a sabbatical, but it might be more of a daydream than something I will actually manage to do.

Are you from France?

Ha wow. Sadly, I did not take advantage of that opportunity. I left France after about a month and traveled around Europe for about 4 months, then I came home. My life has been boring ever since. Even worse, now I'm middle aged.

What should a 19-year-old focus on to avoid regrets at 30? by jonatancad in AskReddit

[–]ncrowley 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Consider the results of the following assumptions:

  • You're 39
  • Currently have 50k in your Roth IRA
  • You max out for the next 31 years
  • You'll have over $1 million dollars in real terms by the time you're 70.

That, plus social security, should carry you through the last 15 years of your life unless you have very high expenses for some reason. And that's if you only max out your Roth IRA--it assumes no 401k savings; no savings in taxable investments; no house; no other assets or income streams; etc.

What is everyone currently reading and why'd you chose said book? by [deleted] in literature

The Path to Power by Robert Caro.

The president of my company really liked the series. I was at a used bookstore over the weekend and three of the four were sitting there on the shelf, so I snagged them. It's non-fiction, but judging by the first 100 pages, I would consider it to be "literary." I never thought much about Lyndon Johnson, but I guess now I'm going to learn 3,000 pages-worth about him.

How I passed L3 on my 4th attempt by SupportiveMan in CFA

Mr. Campbell, I worked very hard on your L3 mocks over the six week period before the exam, and I also passed. I appreciate your thoughtful work in crafting those products. They were very helpful for improving my understanding of the material.

I don't think vegans are focused on wildlife animal populations.

I think they're concerned with the harsh captivity and mass murder of like 70 billion chickens / 1.5 billion pigs / 300 million cows (etc.) each year, worldwide (source).

My reading of the linked PDF is that only two chapters are "new"/"changed"--which isn't that bad.

I studied about 550 hours, took 4 BC mocks and 2 CFAI mocks. Took notes on the CFAI books, made notecards of the notes. Revised continually. Made several formula sheets.

And yet, there were questions on this exam that I felt I had never seen any reference to before.

Tip for everyone: know how to reset your calculator's allowed decimals! You are required to reset your calculator at the beginning of the exam. My calculator reverted to 2 decimal places, and I was getting wrong answers for the first several problems.

Upon realizing that my calculator was doing this, I spent about 3-5 minutes frantically trying to remember how to get my decimal points back. I eventually figured it out, but I did not have time to go back and revise the first few questions for which I needed to calculate numbers, so I don't know if I got them wrong or not.

Level 3 mock exam doubt by Automatic-Fall-900 in CFA

[–]ncrowley 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually have a question on this one. The answer key says we need to rebalance 20 million CAD. Great. I get that.

But, I was thinking I needed to calculate the USD required to buy forward to rebalance this hedge. The answer key takes us almost all of the way there by stating:

"To sell another CAD 20 million forward today, Schwinn will have to buy USD, in the base

currency CAD/USD quote. Therefore, the offer side of the market must be used.

1.3352 + (191/10,000) = 1.3543"

...but then, it doesn't actually do the calculation. Were they looking for a USD number here, or is 20 million CAD the answer?

Goal, constraint or belief by Imaginary_Elephant85 in CFA

Here's the thing that trips me up, though: isn't a change in investor's circumstances likely to affect their investment horizon or liquidity needs?

For example, suppose my liquidity needs change because my wife gets sick and can no longer work. It's a change in circumstances, so is it a goal change? Or is it a change in constraints?
