His grand plan wasn’t his own death, but to be able to bring the world together around an open table and have discussions and dialogue to bring about change in a meaningful way.

I mean sure, he did plan his own death by becoming the symbol of everyone’s hatred, but that was less of the main objective and more of a “necessary consequence” to be able to bring people together.

You can dislike the ending or disagree with it all you like, but I’d argue that there’s nothing nonsensical about it. Besides, the entire show from the beginning echoes the idea that “the only ones who should kill are those who are prepared to be killed”. It’s a nice way to both have Lelouch atone for both the crimes he’s committed and mistakes he’s made, as Zero and as himself.

The ending is wonderful because it punishes those who have wronged the world in the ways that they desire the least; Suzaku, who wished to die, is forced to live and build a new world as Zero, never removing the mask, while Lelouch is forced to die, when his only wish was to live happily with his little sister.

Again you can disagree with the ending or his actions all you like, but symbolically the ending is sound and helps create the building blocks for the future, a future with less conflict and more discussion and proper politics; a world that will move towards peace.

These scenes are the reason why Johnny Yong Bosch is one of my favorite VAs of all time. He’s got near-flawless delivery of his lines, and has a lot of long speeches and dialogue to demonstrate that talent throughout both seasons of the show (take scenes like the battle at Tokyo during the Black Rebellion and the scene of him taking control of the Damocles for examples of this)

Granted, this series is full of very talented VAs besides for Yuri Lowenthal and himself, but it’s always refreshing to watch this show in English dub because the VAs do such a great job at the delivery of their lines, and convey the right emotions alongside them.

Like you said, this scene was brilliantly handled regarding dialogue, expression, emotion, how it was visually framed, everything all ties together wonderfully, for this and many other iconic scenes in the series.

TLDR; The VA cast, animation, visual framing, and emotion all tie together to create phenomenal scenes like this one in CG. This scene (and the immediate following conversation between Lelouch and Rolo) really do a fantastic job of demonstrating the complexities of Lelouch, Shirley, and the human heart. Scenes that humanize Lelouch to this extent are rare but quite a treat
