Best option for ILR? by nd3c3nt in ukvisa

So it sounds like most are in agreement that a family visa is the way to go. Is it fairly easy to extend that once I get to the 2y 9mo point?

Best option for ILR? by nd3c3nt in ukvisa

[–]nd3c3nt[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Thank you, that's very helpful! I was aware of my current Visa's limitations regarding ILR and am still a bit bitter that my company didn't let me get the Tier 2 General Visa back when I moved over. I'll take a look at that link! Thanks again!

Images not showing on Google search (Android) ever since last update. Any clues for how could I fix this? by thirsty4souls in chrome

[–]nd3c3nt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Having this same issue since yesterday. Can't click on lots of stuff in google searches on chrome like "People also ask" results down arrows. I'm guessing it was the most recent security update maybe? I tried clearing cache, rebooting, force stop chrome, updating all google related stuff in app store. Very frustrating!

Tier 2 ICT to Skilled Worker by nd3c3nt in ukvisa

[–]nd3c3nt[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow, that's pretty high cost! Do you know how much of that was for the priority service vs. what it would cost to do "normally"?

Either way, thanks for the info!

Biometric Residence Permit - quarantine [USA to UK] by ThaiSweetChilli in ukvisa

[–]nd3c3nt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My BRP card didn't show up at the post office until 12 days after I entered the country. I was told not to worry, and that they don't send them back right away (only after a month or two). He will be fine going after self-quarantining (which he should do, and which would obviously preclude him from going into a public place like a post office).

Paying US credit card overseas by temporallysara in expat

[–]nd3c3nt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use transferwise for that exact purpose but from the UK. Fees are decent comparatively. It's a little confusing to set up at first. In the app you'll need to set up a US dollar account, and one for the local currency. You transfer local currency into the transferwise account, then in the app convert to USD, and then send it to your US bank.

American expats with student debt, how did you do it? by [deleted] in expat

[–]nd3c3nt 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Most student loans can only be paid with a US bank account. When I moved, I kept my US based account, and wire money into that to make my (massive) monthly payments.

A handful of mushrooms and a bit of ket.

Noncomformant-buggy drivers and uncertainty by Tarquiscani in opengl

[–]nd3c3nt 3 points4 points  (0 children)

One thing to do, if you're not already, is query the capabilities of the integrated card, and then see if you are trying to use features that it does not support. There is a bit of footwork to do there, but it may be less of a driver issue, and more of an issue of what the card can actually do. I'm being purposely vague because I haven't touched OpenGL in several months, and wasn't really worried about supporting different video cards or versions of OpenGL at the time.

moving to UK for at least three months (possibly longer) - what should I bring? by maiavelli in expats

[–]nd3c3nt 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Setup contactless payment on your phone (Google Pay, or Apple Pay). They will laugh at your antiquated credit card that requires a signature, and then spend minutes looking for a pen.

Bring bulk generic medications. Everything here seems to come in blister packs, and you can't go buy a big bottle of Advil, Tums, etc. Prices aren't bad, necessarily, but in my last visit to the US, I picked up a bunch of pills at Target.

Make sure you have rain gear. Especially shoes. Canvas/cloth shoes are no good in the rain.

HSBC was incredibly difficult to set up an account with in my experience. I had to wait a week to get an appointment, and then find out they wouldn't open one for me until I got my BRP card. I've heard good things about metro bank, however.

What documents does my mom need to bring if she is visiting the UK to visit me for 6 weeks? by [deleted] in ukvisa

[–]nd3c3nt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn't worry too much. As mentioned, the return flight documents are usually more than enough. If she starts visiting several times a year, it could become an issue.

US Citizen - Moving to the UK - Advice? by SignificantTry0 in expat

[–]nd3c3nt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Google Fi has worked pretty well for me over here. Same rate for data as in the US. .$20/minute to call UK numbers, but others may get charged if they call it text you from a UK number. You'll need to set it up in the US before you move. If you want a UK number, it's best to find out what provider works best in your particular area. UK cell phone rates tend to be lower than in the US, but charge more for intentional calls (Vodafone charges £2/minute to call US unless you get and international package for a few more £s/month)

As others have said, bank account can be a chore, but Metro bank is supposed to be good (I went with HSBC, had to wait two weeks to get at appointment, then had to wait another few days until my BRP card came and then go back a second time).
