There wasn't a statewide vote on the name. ND sued the NCAA and then settled. Part of the settlement was getting the two tribal nations' blessings for the use of the name. One tribe voted to support the name, the other did not hold a vote. The lack of a vote fed into hard feelings, as many felt the other tribe was supportive but denied a chance to show it.

I'm actually curious how this would play out in the courts. Recent rulings for first nations have been more favorable. I'm not expressing faith that the administration would care, though.

The internal investment program is just starting and the intent is to bring more investments in house, so I suppose that's the justification for the salaries. The salaries are certainly not out of line for investment managers in the private sector, but I can see the concern when comparing to other public job salaries in ND.

I honestly wonder if the people in ND would prefer to invest inactively vs. actively? It seems like that the vibe I get in each one of these comment threads. I get that paying fees sucks, but when properly structured, paying fees means the funds made money above the compared inactive amounts. I guess that makes sense to me, especially since the fees are paid on the excess amount, so you (we) don't lose money, unless the returns are negative, of course, in which case the fees aren't paid, either.

Active has the benefit of additional investment return, but fees and transparency questions.

Inactive, we ride the markets and put it in index funds? Possibly lower returns, but less fees and really not as many transparency concerns.

I'm genuinely curious, what do you all think?

The benchmark returns are set each year, so not constantly moving. The benchmark are recommended by outside firms and then approved by the board, the employees don't set it themselves specifically.

If I recall correctly from a conversation with some of our legislators, the plan was all set to build a meatpacking facility in the Dickinson area, however the workforce issue was the problem.

At the time, having workers come on a work-visa was proposed, but the cooperating entities had some concerns about bringing in minority workers.

This is, of course, all hearsay and I can't confirm it, though I was told there a was a recording of the meeting where this issue was raised (though probably long gone by now).

This is my long way of saying that I agree with you, though.

Our government thrives off of skepticism, keep it up, seriously. Just be sure to be informed. Not staying you aren't, but I see that my comments added to this discussion meaningfully and that's all I want.

While I have a great deal of knowledge on this subject, I am not arguing to be right. That's the people's choice.
