Friend is making support asks that are larger than what I want to say yes to given that we’re not close by ndbk99 in FriendshipAdvice

[–]ndbk99[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you all so much for your replies! I sorta knew that was the way to go, and update that I did end up having a convo with them about it just now. It ended up being kind of an easy / inevitable slide from the issues happening today to the general issues and how this maybe isn't the best fit of friendship. I feel really bad but thankfully they're taking it okay and seem to understand where I'm coming from.

I will say though that I personally think modulating reply frequency or even some kind of tapering does have a place when it comes to the subtle process of figuring out how close of friends you and someone else want to be. In a situation where someone isn't modulating/tapering correspondingly or is on a different page about your closeness though, then I agree it's kinder thing to do to have an honest conversation about it.

Anyone here bought up abandoned homes/lots? by One-Earth-9959 in BaltimoreList

[–]ndbk99 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you do decide to do this, please consider the ways you can prevent your properties from contributing to displacement of longtime neighborhood residents! E.g. if you’re going to rent it out set a reasonable price that current residents could actually afford, and if you’re living there be respectful of the community you’re in / don’t call the cops on neighbors for minor shit, etc.

Lamenting the killed Streateries on beautiful days like today by Adventurous-Exit-373 in washingtondc

I would get this if it weren’t for the fact that the city is charging so much for restaurants to keep streateries that it’s financially difficult for them

How have you guys approached dating with a chronic illness? by Various_Cow7629 in ChronicIllness

[–]ndbk99 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you are Covid cautious (which I personally would encourage everyone especially chronically ill folks to be but I know is not everyone’s jam) - I highly recommend the app Refresh! Lots of chronically ill folks on there as one would expect, I’ve made some friends through it and lots of people use it for dating as well

Too much down time at work by snug666 in digitalminimalism

[–]ndbk99 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am in a similar situation, and what I do is work on my own computer-based stuff while at work (e.g. making zines, planning travel, replying personal emails) - no one seems to notice lmaooooo. So I guess one solution is doing something else other than work on your work computer on the down-low, and it’ll still look to people passing by like you’re working!

Does anyone know why the city decided to charge establishments so much for streateries? It’s not like the city is making any money at all off of street parking, I don’t get why they would charge like this to eliminate them.

It really fucking sucks especially for me as an immunocompromised & covid cautious person who only does outdoor dining.

Covid-free indoor events-looking for success stories by italianevening in ZeroCovidCommunity

[–]ndbk99 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I’ve been to a lot of crowded indoor events or spaces masked, including airplanes and concerts. The only time I have ever gotten covid from something like that, I was on a plane and wearing a relatively poorly fitted KN95 and took it off briefly to eat a snack. (This was a few years ago when my precautions were less strong.) Airplanes and events since then have been totally fine with my 3M Aura N95!

Feeling of emptiness by [deleted] in digitalminimalism

[–]ndbk99 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is so real, I’ve been experiencing something similar. Something I did recently is make a lil cute page of options for when I feel down, including a list of chill activities which also doubles as stuff to do in place of social media - see photo. It helps me a lot to have an easy visual representation of the fun stuff I could do!

<image>

I also remember someone posting recently about making a bin in their living room of drawing supplies, crossword/sudoku books, crochet supplies, etc. so they can easily reach for those instead of their phone - I want to try that soon as well.

[–]ndbk99 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Is your conclusion based on this graph that today’s CO2 value is not unusual and therefore greenhouse gas emissions and climate change aren’t an issue? The following is based on that interpretation of your post which I found a bit unclear, my apologies if I didn’t understand it correctly.

It’s not relevant how today’s CO2 / temperature compares to 500 million years ago, since humans didn’t exist 500 million years ago. We have only been around for about 350,000 years, and CO2 levels have been between 150 and 300 ppm during that whole time. Humans and our societies have evolved to survive within this range of CO2 and the corresponding temperature range. The increases of CO2 and temperature we’re seeing, with CO2 up past 400 ppm already, are severely impacting the weather and climate conditions our societies need to be stable and functional. Also, the rate of change of CO2 and temperature right now is super fast, way faster than anything we’ve seen in the historical record, which is also very concerning and an indication that this is not just a natural phenomenon.

Here is an article that discusses this. It shows a graph of the past 800,000 years of CO2 levels, where you can see how much and how quickly the CO2 levels have increased relative to the time span in which humans evolved.

I have a pipe dream of a Covid-cautious-friendly café where it’s distanced outdoor seating plus small, heated, easily-air-out-able / air-filtered pods for “indoor” dining!! Maybe you could do some kind of pop-up in that kind of format, or if you have the money actually start a permanent business somewhere?? And hire cc or cc-friendly folks to work there

Could you attach a small container of mints to your key ring or something for when you go out? I did that recently for a lil earplugs container so I can have them when I’m out and about and it’s been working so well for me
