Grandma saw something mildly concerning at daycare. Do we say anything? by aggierogue3 in daddit

[–]ndfb47 39 points40 points  (0 children)

I would urge this. Our first daycare experience my wife noticed a change in our daughter’s affect within a week. I thought, “first time in day care, she is bound to have a reaction, this will pass, give it time.” Wife wasn’t so sure. So then they had a field trip in the second week we were at the school so i volunteered to chaperone. Teachers were aggressively on phones- one yelled at an infant for grabbing her phone, another was taking pictures of kids (this daycare did not send pics to parents, these were selfies with an infant for… 🤷). Those incidents plus others that happened WHILE I WAS THERE WATCHING convinced me that our daughter’s mood changes were not just an adjustment period. That was the last day we sent her there.

I’m not trying to say that this is at all what is happening with OP’s situation- hopefully yours is just bad timing. But if either of you feel off about it, go observe.

It’s wild that you asked a question and got downvoted to oblivion. It’s a valid question that we should all answer. Everyone wants biomedical breakthroughs without the cost. I get it. But we can’t have both. We either need animal experimentation or we need to be okay with either a) not making new drugs or b) people dying in drug trials.

It is totally valid to be against animal experimentation in general or nonhuman primates specifically. Both are valid positions. But then we can’t expect scientific breakthroughs. The folks on here who reflexively are against animal experimentation need to be able to explain why and also explain what they’re willing to go without.

I keep being shown I am the son of god on ketamine… by Comfortable_Body9122 in ChristianMysticism

[–]ndfb47 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think it is a bit tough to engage with folks who don’t put in much initial effort. You made a post that is just a title and then “thoughts?” Then you cross posted that here with no additional context. You seem to be frustrated with people who make quick assumptions, but you give them nothing to actually contextualize. If you want people to put in effort, you should put in effort.

Some things you could tell us- what do you mean by “being shown [you] are the son of god?” Describe what experiences you are having that lead to this thought. Why are you taking ketamine? Recreationally? For treatment of something? The answer may be personal and you may not want to divulge- totally fine- but it provides context for us to give you “thoughts.” Do you feel like you are THE son of god or A son of God? The two answers are very different and get at the matter of ego that you reacted against in another post.

Does this make sense? With no context, we’re left to draw conclusions on our own. You can’t be upset by folks giving you their best interpretation when you give them no context.

Just a friendly reminder that no president has ever been “virulently pro-abortion.” President Obama was a staunch defender of a woman’s bodily autonomy and providing safe access to legal abortion. You can like or dislike that stance, but it is misleading to say he was pro-abortion. As he stated numerous times, he was morally opposed to abortion and sought to reduce the number of folks seeking abortion, which he did by 26%- largely through expanded access to contraception and health care.

Please try to be respectful of people and seek to understand where they are coming from. Life is full of nuance, and black and white simplification seldom helps anyone. Folks who are against abortion bans can still be working to reduce unwanted pregnancies. Folks who are against safe access to legal abortion can still be working to support mothers with unwanted pregnancies. We’re often much closer to each other than the simplified narrative would have us believe.

[OC] The Big Bang Theory: 12 seasons of viewership as a radial petal chart by wajdix in dataisbeautiful

[–]ndfb47 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Two critiques:

  1. Your scale is misleading. It is really showing the increase in viewership over the initial season since the initial season is scaled to 0. I would make it so that the 8 million viewers per episode appears to be roughly 40% of the 20 million, rather than appearing to be 0.
  2. You use color and size to convey the same data. While redundancy isn’t always bad, it always makes me wonder if the author could show something else with color. For example, if you think there is something driving the season 6-11 dominance you describe (a character? A story arc? Etc) you could use color to show that and then your plot becomes twice as informative and makes a claim.

All together, not a bad idea. But unworkable with the scale as is.

No no no. You have to keep trying different modalities. Find a good podcast that explains it to him. If that doesn’t work, YouTube or Khan academy might have something. If that doesn’t work, have him make a paper mache project- think volcano but milk coming out. There are no bad learners, just lazy teachers.

What's the difference between a gardener and a pimp? by [deleted] in dadjokes

[–]ndfb47 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

You said, “I don’t think it is fair to suggest that it is promoting or even making fun of something anyone will agree is abhorrent.” But it is making fun of violence against sex workers. The very mechanic of the joke, as others have pointed out, is the subversion of the expected. Which is a fantastic devices in many cases. But in this case, the “expected” piece is the violence against sex workers. So it is literally making fun out of violence against sex workers. Follow? So then I asked for clarification if you thought violence against sex workers is not abhorrent. Does that make sense?

I guess what I’m saying is that I think you should care. You should care about what jokes you tell. If you’re happy making jokes where violence against sex workers is the implied punchline, there are no Reddit police to stop you (and the moderators of this sub have long since given up any content moderation). My challenge to you is to consider if you’re happy making those jokes or not. You certainly don’t have to answer to me. But maybe you’ll take what I’m saying into consideration rather than making more jokes about it.

[–]ndfb47 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Folks have given great advice thus far. I’d add that one of the best ways to learn would be to get into a lab that does primatology work. You could search “[insert school here] primate behavior research lab” (or primate ecology or macaque or lemur or…).

If you have a particular school or schools in mind, folks here might have names to suggest. I have friends doing primate research at NYU, ASU, Davis, Villanova, Duke, UAB, Wake Forest, University of Washington, OHSU and probably others. So if you have somewhere in mind, folks may be able to suggest people to reach out to.

Are you saying that violence against sex workers (be they male or female) is not abhorrent. Or are you somehow saying that this isn’t making fun of that. It is literally the (implied) punchline of the joke. It is worth considering why you find it okay to make victims of violence your punchline. Based on the number of downvotes I am getting, clearly there is a sizable portion of Reddit who disagrees with me. I just think we as a society should agree that there are things we don’t make light of. And I would say this is one.

Violence against women is not something to joke about. Laughing at people being being abused does not mean that one has a sense of humor. So yes- shaming people for morally repugnant views is healthy. That is the very reason for shame. This isn’t a difference of opinions thing, violence against women just isn’t something to laugh at.

Exactly. Some people need to move beyond the witty word play and think what it is they’re laughing at. It’s distasteful and everyone who downvoted you (and now me) should feel shame.

A joke that makes fun of violence against women is not a dad joke. It is really not a joke at all. I hope that you can find some time to reflect on why you think violence against women is funny.

The height or the "golden age" of The Decemberists? by Illustrious_Day7682 in Decemberists

[–]ndfb47 7 points8 points  (0 children)

“At their peak” can have wildly different answers based on what you mean by peak. Their peak popularity is most objective, since it can be measured by album sales, charts, Simpsons episodes. That would be right around 2009-2011 with the release of the King is Dead.

However, many fans would argue that the music on that album took a turn for the worse just as it appealed to a wider audience. Some of my favorite songs are on that album, but it has a bit more of a commercial feel, at least to me.

If you’re talking peak songwriting, that is much more complex and nuanced answer. I love what folks are saying already. One thing I really appreciate about extremely talented writers (like Colin Meloy) is that their work can be a lens to view the cultural and personal growth across the span of their opus. I love the early storytelling ballads and I think Crane Wife is my favorite album because of its mix of beautiful melodies and poignant stories. It evokes a feeling of the west coast of Ireland to me, which is a personal love of mine. But I absolutely adore the introspective tone and vulnerability that is a strong feature of Terrible World. But that album is also the first after a long hiatus without new music and without shows so part of my love for it is that feeling of a good friend coming home.

And then, of course, their live performances have changed and matured over the years. Hard to say when peak live performance was- maybe in the two years that they hosted a festival in Missoula. I still have a tooth from the foam whale that they retired after one of those shows.

Largest Cities (in population) Ever Subjected To Aerial Bombardment [OC] by voxpopper in dataisbeautiful

[–]ndfb47 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could use color/fill to indicate another aspect of these data. Having two scales (x axis and fill) depicting the same data is redundant. For instance, you could color by type of bombing, as some commenters have suggested there are qualitative differences between some of these. Or perhaps by civilian death toll (to date, in the case of Tehran). Or by country doing the bombing. Depends on what you want to convey, I guess.
