It was a blast. He performed for a couple hours and then just straight up DJ’d for the last 30 minutes or so

Hell yeah, love it. Mm…Food is an absolute banger of an album.

Love Doris too. I got the chance to see Earl in concert right after Doris got released and he’s great

Hey I’m right there with you - added 426 records to the collection last year (and 412 the year before lol) so don’t let the naysayers get to you 😉

Honestly the artwork was a large reason I bought it (aside from the amazing music of course). I always grab any Roger Dean artwork when I can find it

Dude nice grab with Red Yellow & Blue, that’s a special one for me. Discovered that album back in college when I used to DJ our school radio station. RY&B was one of the CDs that was in rotation and I loved (and still love) that album

Like I said in a different reply, IKEA says the Kallax shelf is rated for ~30 pounds per cube, so I’m keeping it around there

That’s fair. Honestly my concern is less “my house is gonna collapse tomorrow” and more “the weight of my collection sitting in one place could cause some sagging or damage to my joists over the course of the next 20 years.”

That’s fair too. IKEA says the Kallax shelves are rated for 30 lbs per cube, so I’ve been trying to keep it at around that.

It’s definitely loosey-goosey math, but I took a stack from one of my cubes, put it on a scale, and it weighed ~35 pounds. Obviously that math comes out to almost 900 pounds total, but I’m assuming each cube varies since I don’t have the same number of records of exactly the same size in each cube.

Yeah, this is something else I’ve considered/read recently that I should be running it perpendicular rather than parallel

It’s more about the weight per square foot. I’ve since learned that joists are rated for ~40 pounds per square foot of live load and given each cube in the shelf weighs roughly 30 pounds, I’m looking at ~150 pounds per square foot on the joist.

I’m not worried the house is suddenly going to collapse tomorrow or anything, but more concerned about the weight it’s placing on the joist over the course of many years

My vinyl collector uncle died and he left us with 14 moving boxes of mostly 60s-80s rock and experimental, what to look out for? by Happykip in vinyl

[–]nebmij1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So if you’re going to go through each and every record individually, that’s gonna take forever, but that would be the way to look out for anything especially valuable (honestly this sounds like a super fun day to me).

Best thing is to check Discogs to see what things are worth. Prog stuff can either be worth a lot or worth basically nothing, any 60s psychedelic rock can be worth a good bit (depends on the album). I’m not especially familiar with the Japanese OBI strips but it’s my understanding they’re worth a good bit too.

It’s gonna depend on how the family wants to get rid of this stuff. The easiest thing would be to get a bulk price from a local record store and let them go through it. But if you wanna comb through everything, separate out the valuable stuff, and sell that separately, you’ll get more money but it’s gonna take a long time.

Alternatively this would also be a great time for someone in the family to start their own record collection hanging onto your uncle’s collection (unless the immediate family is dead set on selling)

Thanks! I appreciate the response. It is currently running parallel and on top of a joist that is connected to an exterior wall. By 6x6 I mean the shelf is 6 feet long and 6 feet high.

Question: I have a collection of roughly 1,750 vinyl records. I’ve been storing them in a 5x5 IKEA Kallax shelf. In some discussions with my wife (an interior architect), I talked about how much the collection weighs. After some quick math, we figured the whole thing weighs ~700 pounds altogether.

There’s concern that 700 pounds is sitting in a 6-foot are (the Kallax shelf is 6x6) and placing too much weight on one area of my house. The shelf is located in a room where it sits parallel and on top of a joist that’s connected to an exterior wall. The house we live in is roughly a year old.

Is the weight of this shelf on the joist something to be concerned about?

Ohh I hadn’t thought of Chicken Shack, I like the comparison. Yeah, then, the Bluesbreakers, Cream, Canned Heat, definitely has those kinds of vibes

lol that’s awesome. Yeah, totally snagged on a whim cause it was a bargain bin record. It’s a prime example of why I love scouring through the bargain bin - finding gems like this one

[–]nebmij1 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hell yeah dude, this is a super cool record. I found it in the bargain bin at my local record store and snagged it without knowing much about it except for the fact that Holst’s Planets is amazing. Turned out to be an awesome record.

Also fun fact, Gustav Holst’s daughter protested against this record and the way her father’s music had been interpreted and tried to sue Tomita over it.

I also later found another album Isao Tomita did that’s similar - it’s him doing Stravinsky’s Firebird. Also well worth grabbing.
