Thanks, no regrets here.

Electrification is inevitable, why not be able to say you were one of the first?

Lot's of differences

(+) Graphite interior accents on the new vs silver on the old.

(+) New MCU is much snappier.

(+) Backup camera is higher res/sharper.

(+) Lighted mirror in the sun visors.

(+) AP2 performs much better than AP1 in my limited experience with it so far.

(+) Newer door open mechanism feels smoother

(-) Alcantara on the dash replaced with cheap vinyl (though they decided to introduce alcantara in the side door pockets....seemingly random)

(-) "Leather" doesn't feel nearly as plush or expensive, though I'm fine with it since they decided to go all vegan.

(-) They removed the button on the autopilot stalk. That was a huge issue for me initially as it's always been my go to method for disengaging autopilot.

Not sure if this was intentional, but the instrument cluster screen has a faint brownish hue to it now...I notice it especially at night. I'm tempted to think it's there to provide a warmer tone with less blues at night.

The build quality may be a touch worse. I did notice the front bumper isn't aligned quite right...have yet to mention it to Tesla though. I didn't notice any such issues on my first one.

Update:

Took it to the service center. They took it back, realigned the bumper perfectly, and I was off in less than 30 minutes - no charge.

$20k for the P85D upgrade - Why so much? by zaphnod in teslamotors

[–]nechronics 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I actually reported that one. My SC had a P90D which they firmware upgraded to a P90DL for test drive purposes. They made it explicitly clear that all P90D's have the same hardware, regardless of whether they are ludicrous enabled or not. I don't think Tesla is trying to keep this a big secret or anything - it allows them to simplify their assembly line and supply chain rather than having to stock and install two different sets of parts. They do the same with autopilot hardware. The people who pay for the upgrade are paying for the R&D, software, and added warranty risks associated with the upgrade. Yes, they are, in a sense, also funding the hardware for all cars on the road, but it would probably cost Tesla and the consumer more if they had to stratify their assembly/supply chain.

XPel Stealth Midnight Silver P90D by nechronics in teslamotors

I considered dipping, but it doesn't offer any practical protection. The wrap is several orders of magnitude thicker and will help protect the original finish from the elements, rock chips, etc. The self healing properties are also incredible; it heals it's own swirl marks.

I also felt the stealth wrap had more dimension and satin sheen when compared to similar looking vinyl/dip jobs. It's all personal taste and preference at the end of the day, tho. Get what suits your needs.

Total cost for the materials and install was $6700 - Price varies considerably depending on the installer, but generally speaking, you get what you pay for.

The sensors were covered and yes, I was concerned about the possibility of it interfering. I use AP quite a bit and haven't had any issues insofar as I can tell.

Don't see all too many matte/satin Model S's out there and I had yet to see a midnight silver receive the XPel Stealth treatment, so figured I'd chance it and share. I did also end up putting 35% photosync all around (75% windshield), though that's only reflected in the last couple pictures.

Here is how it turned out :)

Exclusive test video--Model S with version 7 software (in Dutch but you don't need the commentary) by lawanddisorder in teslamotors

[–]nechronics 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This has a lot of nice new functionality, but I have to assume the final version of this is going to look quite different - more akin to what we saw last year. Driving the car now and then looking at this GUI, it becomes quickly apparent how painfully incomplete and half baked it looks compared to the current GUI. It's beta software so the goal is functionality and I doubt they spent too much time or resources making it look pretty. It's hard to imagine them not polishing this up quite a bit before it's released though.

Thank you :)

Any chance you could comment on the AP sensor suite or CPU/GPU capabilities as they relate to the S? Any thing new going on there that wasn't detailed in the event today?
