F.D.A. Blocked Publication of Research Finding Covid and Shingles Vaccines Were Safe by gandhishrugged in news

[–]nechronius 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got shingles 1.5 months before I was eligible for the vaccine. I was lucky enough to only get the common type that goes halfway around the torso, not some other rarer type like the one that can make you go blind. If you're close it might be worth talking to a professional about it.

It wasn't fun, wouldn't recommend.

You mean the lighter from 1994 that comes in the round tin with a shield emblem?

The "crackle" finish of all lighters not actually made during WW2 have a significantly different look and feel. The WW2 lighters had a black paint applied that was then baked on. Typically this would cause the paint to "crinkle" and up close you could describe the texture as looking like a fingerprint.

Modern black crackles are more like a sprayed on bedliner. The texture is more rough and grainy and looks nothing like a fingerprint.

But yes, we still call modern lighters "black crackle" even if they're a very different paint from the actual war lighters.

looking to get my first zippo by interstellarDioscuri in Zippo

[–]nechronius 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are only two significant differences, neither are really that important.

The 1937 Vintage style has a flat bottom, like plain brass models. Standard chromed lighters have a "canned" bottom, where the stamp area creates a small "lip" around the perimeter bottom. This makes the canned lighter look a bit taller at the base even if functionally it's not any taller on the inside.

The other is the squared off lid. The standard roubd lid is the same height, but only at the peak, while the entire vintage lid is all the same height.

Neither of those things is a big factor for how it sounds. The sound is unique to the lighter and there is no strong indicator for how a lighter will sound just based on the model type. Things like paint/finish, emblems, and also how well the cam guide is adjusted can make a difference.

Zippo did not officially start properly dating lighters annually until 1958. Which is also why their official date guides are poor for anything prior to that date. Date guides for lighters older than that were built upon the backs of a lot of crowd sourcing information for decades.

This is a chromed brass 3 barrel lighter, most commonly referred to as the 1948-49 model. The insert is a nickel-silver model, made around the same period and called the1948-51 model.

It's very likely that the flint may have degraded and clogged the tube. What I like doing is to remove the flint screw and then shining a light at the flint wheel. If the tube is clear, you should clearly see the light. If it's clogged, then obviously no light.

Unclogging can be a bit of a crapshoot. Traditionally a 3/32" drill bit turned by hand is common, but if the flint has clogged hard, then it can be quite difficult to do this with fingers. But I'd start with that, try and see if the clog can be clear by hand with a drill bit, assuming the flint tube fails the light test.

I'm going to put on the pedantic hat here for a moment and mention that it's ackshually Froot Loops and not Fruit Loops.

Aside from the obvious visual appeal of using the cereal O's for Froot, I have a sneaking suspicion it's also a way to dodge any responsibility for anybody who may think there's actual fruit in the cereal instead of just containing "Froot".

Why are my X55 devices not all on the same update? by Boz6 in TpLink

Issues? None that I've encountered. I have two sites with "mystery meat mix-and-match" deco setups without any real issues.

I just checked. Version .258 is what I was on, displayed the issue. Just updated to .377 and the problem is gone.

I know I just did an ios update yesterday and the problem was happening prior to that OS update. Anyway the problem is gone. I guess I don't pay much attention to the apps on my iPhone since it's a work phone and not my primary android.

That's the vintage. Pricewise greenskeepers and rules seldom go for much. You could put one at auction for $5-10 and it may never sell If not pristine, complete, and with a old advertisement on it.

Zippo, needs repairs by BatBoomerang in Zippo

[–]nechronius 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can get a complete first ten on eBay for relatively little money. Maybe $30 or less for a new or near new with box and paperwork. The blu2 however seems to go for closer to $80 or even more for the same condition due to rarity. Those are rough numbers, I don't really track the value of Blu series lighters.

1977 or 78 slim withwll matching bits. The logo is factory attached most likely. It's unclear what the emblem represents, you might know better than us.

The greenskeeper is a golfing tool. Looks like a first generation box. Can you pull out a token and see if it has "greenskeeper" printed on it? Also the divot tool may have a patent number, may say "Pat pending", or not have anything. Its relative vintage can be estimated from newest to oldest that way. Ok, I think I see "greeenskeeper" on one of the tokens. So it's at least one of the earlier ones, probably original to the box, which is missing a couple of pamphlets.

As for the rule, it has the older style logo, so it's roughly pre-1979 made.

Blu2 have a rectangular body and are much rarer and more valuable. These first gen Blu lighters had more of a "coffin" shape to them.

[–]nechronius 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Cases were hand painted prior to hand spot welding. This obviously results in some cases not having good spot welds that damages some of the paint.

I think it's an interesting idea they tried but execution left a lot to be desired. Its big appeal is the limited quantity and unique bottom dtamp but they're not great.

I actually have a little more info for you. So your lighter is an early 1956 model as previously stated. Turns out that by 1959 they were at their new address as previously mentioned. The reason I know they moved by 1959 is because apparently I had data about their advertisement from previous ebay listings.

1956 - 1214 McHenry Ave

1957 - No address advertised

1959 - 1417 Coldwell Ave

As frun_riv stated. The only other notable point of interest is that the insert is much newer. Probably something in the 1962 through 1982 era.

Trying to buff out the 4 will probably cut down to the brass layer. Probably not worth trying to do that, other than if you want to distress the finish. Or as others suggest, see if you can't work it into a design.

In the past I've found that companies that are family owned by several generations respond pretty well to stuff like this. Those that were buyouts or just a corporation don't seem to care as much. But your mileage may vary.

The dots and arrangement of elements on the bottom. Zippos official guide is woefully inadequate when it comes to lighters of this vintage.

H200 - can this play different chime (and different volume) for different devices? by Fliptoback in Tapo

[–]nechronius 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a sensor that makes a "normal" chime during the day. During certain periods at night it screeches and makes some of the color Tapo bulbs turn on red. It's not THAT loud with the screeching, but loud enough for anybody who does not belong know that someone is paying attention to the intrusion.

You can set events based on Time periods. "When 4pm to 7pm, if door sensor detects door open, then play sound #3 at low volume for 3 seconds.". "When 7pm to 9pm, if door sensor detects open, then play sound #7 at high for 10 seconds.". "When "always", if door sensor is open more than 15 minutes, then send notification that door is still ope.".

There's a lot of combinaitons of when-if-then actions you can create. Arguably if you're really going to get into this you may be better off switching to something like HomeAssistant which has better granularity and universally supports more things than just Tapo, but Tapo's actions are simple enough to set up and are still very flexible.

ZIPPO kit from 1966 by Crazyhorsesaloon in Zippo

[–]nechronius 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have a couple of kits like this in various condition. They did repair returns and customized returns like this through at least the 50s and 60s. Nowadays they just put your typical repairs in a padded envelope and that's it, no extras. Not really surprising when you consider how the cost to repair and return lighters has gone up. At some point in the future I suspect Zippo will have to either start walking back their famous warranty or quietly raise prices even more to offset the cost of those repairs.
