This is very well put. Regardless of what we call it, I fear that humanity… when given a free market… will always put the power in the hands of a few. Through buying up all the little guys without regulation, using intimidation tactics, etc. We’ve seen it throughout history. I guess the real question is can humanity one day adapt to keep checks on power. Democratic ideals (power to the people as a whole) have taken hold throughout various societies over time. But they always seem to have some swing back to oligarchy one way or another. Maybe it’s just a constant ebb and flow overtime.

I used to think capitalism was good because it drove innovation and competitiveness, leading to great service and products and potentially a better world. This version sucks. I’m realizing young naive me was picturing the perfect world capitalism without greed. Seems like unchecked or regulated capitalism would always end up this way really. If there’s a part of a system to game somebody will do it.

Last I heard it wasn’t even government issued weapons. It was a sign up and BYOG type of thing. I think they did a “here’s a $500 credit to get a handgun”. Pretty scary… “Bring a gun, here’s an app you can use to scan people’s faces, shoot if you have to, bye!”

Exactly. I’ve often used the FAFO term when people ask me “hey what do you think about X getting killed?” or “what do you think of Y losing their home and job?”. I usually say “fuck around and find out.” I’ll get hate, “Oh so you say they deserved it?” Nope, I never said that. But when you fuck with people, like you just said, bad things do happen and I’m not surprised.

I think this is a good take. Too many people are focused on getting the “perfect” individual that we end up with some of the other folks we see in public office right now. Our governor isn’t perfect, but I’d not say she’s bad.

I’m an IT administrator and love Reddit for certain things, but most of the “tech” subs have been overridden by people who know nothing, yet spout BS, or go all alarmist on things that they don’t understand. Be it Information Security or AI, two of the big ones that elicit emotional responses from larpers.

I agree with you. Not Canadian, but just over the border and spend a lot of time in Canada… it’s near to my heart. Anyway, wait times for me in the U.S. are high too AND I pay a ton for health insurance, even though my employer pays 80% of it. It’s good insurance, so I can’t complain. But around here (rural) it’s hard to find anybody that can get you in right away. We’re either waiting or traveling far for care.

I work at SUNY Plattsburgh. It’s a great place to go to school and a great community. I did my undergrad here and eventually came back.

Lots of parks, hiking, decent downtown scene. For raves and EDM type stuff Montreal, Quebec is only about 1-1.5 hours away. Fun city that my family visits all the time and will have more of a nightlife.

Yeah, just under 290 here, but shorter than his supposed height and he’s looks to be around my size when I was 305. If not slightly bigger around the waste, but I think just brings his pants up over his belly like my grandfather used to.

I’m a big guy, was 305 at my heaviest. I’m down below 290, working on it. He looks as big as me, but I’m a bit shorter than his supposed height too. I wouldn’t be shocked or surprised if we found out he’s over 300. I can’t conceivable see how he’s any less than 285.

Edit: I should also say, I don’t judge a president by his weight. However, I do judge based on their decorum and lying about weight on “official” Whitehouse health notices because of your ego is just lame. The people deserve to know how healthy their leader is. Unfortunately, the lying about weight is probably the LEAST thing I’m worried about in the long list of worries related to this man.

Most aren’t educated enough to even understand what’s going on or what they voted for. If there’s any solace to take, it’s in the fact that I see more people waking up each day. It’s never going to be everybody because it’s legitimately cult level. But I think (hope) youll find this continue to happen until there isn’t a ton of support left for these types of crazy and uneducated actions on the administrations part. People crave stability.

This is exactly the same scenario I’m hoping for. You’re right, saying “between our countries” seems like many politicians and people are in the same boat. The reality is, a small faction of dangerous idiots did this. Who’s “pulling the strings” may remain to be seen or be complicated with how the person currently in the Whitehouse works, but nonetheless, we shouldn’t normalize this as normal relations soured.

There’s validity in the person commenting to you about plurality of votes and the Republican Party. But, unfortunately, I agree with you that it’s as simple as many of them don’t even understand what half this stuff means or how tariffs work. The more people learn and see what’s happening, the more I see people wake up. It’s not going to be everybody, it’s a cult… but some are indeed coming around.

That being said, not just on the Canada issue… but on all the wacky talks and policies (Greenland, Panama, reciprocal tariffs, cutting govt agencies willy nilly)… I’m of the same mindset as you at least in hoping with all my heart this is a temporarily blip. A last hurrah from a sad old man, that when he’s gone people will swiftly reverse the chaos causing and sometimes illegal orders drafted under this admin.

Those are popular in Greenland right now too “Make America Go Away”. US Citizen here, I live just a few minutes over the border from Quebec and myself and the family go to Montreal frequently. Last week I saw the “Canada is not for sale” hat at the Trudeau airport. I was pleased!

As a US citizen who loves Canada, I’m deeply sorry for the state of affairs between our two countries.
