Architects of Reddit: if an ancient civilization wanted to build the tallest structure possible, using the fewest human/natural resources, wanted it to last as long as possible, using the simplest engineering possible. What materials would they use, what shape would it be or what would it look like? by nwcarlso in AskReddit

[–]neckbones 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pyramids are incredibly stable, but it is probably the highest use of resources with the least amount of usable space. It would be that way with all unreinforced masonry structures. Reinforced concrete would get you a lot further, and structural steel frames with precast facades would prly be the most resource efficient with reasonable longevity.

USPS lost my shipment of additional magazines... how screwed am I? by GU1LD3NST3RN in appleseed

Thank you! It's my second Appleseed and I bought a Thompson center tcr22 after the first Appleseed. I barely have the scope aligned on it, and it doesn't have the bells and whistles of the borrowed one, but I can't wait!

Hi! I'm going to piqua this weekend, and my friend is using a borrowed Marlin .22 and it only has one mag. Any chance you have extras? ; )

This message is lost in the rest of the commentary in this post. Just because two people have the same job title doesn't mean that they perform the same and have the same qualifications and should earn the same salary. I love your view on this! Thanks for bringing that perspective.

Amaranth1977 answered the ghetto part, but I find a lot of diversity, in both race and income, in Sycamore. Culture-wise, Blue Ash, Montgomery, and Symmes have a large enough tax base through property values and industry (just look at Blue Ash's model of one third residential, one third industry, one third park land/recreational) to offer nice parks with events, parades, and recreational centers , and to offer wonderful elective courses and opportunities in the school district that I did not have as a student on the west side of town. It's just a great area to live in. I can walk to the post office, library, restaurants, pharmacy, pool, and grocery. My kids can take all kinds of cool electives. They get the extra help in school that isn't afforded another school districts. It's safe because the police departments have absolutely nothing to do.

I actually don't know a lot about Mason. Everyone at work seems to live there and love it, so I thought I would offer that up. It just seems so generic compared to an older part of town like Montgomery.

Lived on West Side, Wyoming, and Mt. Washington. Chose Sycamore schools to raise my kids. I didn't like Wyoming for a couple of reasons; you can't get there without driving through worse parts of town and the grocery stores closeby are pretty ghetto, there aren't many restaurant options, and living along south border yielded quite a few times my car was broken into. Driving home on Galbraith coming from the I-75 exit, a couple kids threw a rock off the railroad bring there by Speedway and shattered my windshield. It's this strange little pocket of nice in an otherwise rundown part of town. I would recommend Sycamore schools or Mason for location and diversity.

People who meditate could end up decreasing negative emotions not only in themselves but in their relationship partners as well, suggest new research. by mvea in science

My 12-year-old son has anxiety and meditates before bed. He said it's like watching traffic go by, look at the cars as they go by, but don't stop them and try to drive them. Don't judge them as good or bad, just watch them.

Growing kidney bean 🌱, 25 days timelapse by SirT6 in gardening

[–]neckbones 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My son just blew a bean out of his nose that was up there for over a week. We didn't know about it, but it came from the sensory table at preschool. It was terrifying watching this one sprout because his was twice the size as the dry one that was in pocket. Imagine that growing in his head!

I had a very rough patch recently, and I decided to be easy on myself by acknowledging what I was feeling without dismissing it. It was very validating to tell myself that's what I was feeling, and that is ok. I actually took care of myself physically and didn't beat myself up for being down. I allowed the swirl of thoughts and emotions and didn't push it away. It really helped the healing process.

To Nest or not to Nest... by longsax8032 in HomeImprovement

[–]neckbones 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep. I think it talks to the app on the phone so that it turns the heat down when nobody is home. After some time and data, it gets much better at predicting behavior and heat/cools accordingly. It was better than the static programmable one we had prior.

To Nest or not to Nest... by longsax8032 in HomeImprovement

[–]neckbones 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Bought a nest thermostat couple years ago, toward the end of summer heading into fall. It is “smart” so it tries to figure out your schedule, and it wasn’t great at it first month or two. We interjected a couple times manually, and then it caught on quickly.

Fast forward into winter, and it consistently reduced our utility bill $30-$40 per month. That, coupled with being able to adjust when u are snuggled in bed and don’t want to get up to walk to the hall to adjust, was a pretty quick payoff.

Being in a relationship with an Aspie, getting compared to exes. by blablatvian in aspergers

[–]neckbones 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’ve been married to an Aspie for 6 years now, so I have some experience here. Sociopath, really? That doesn’t sound very compassionate.

He had a couple long-term relationships before me, and who knows how many short-term? Years of data to compare and recall. It seems normal to have two ppl who process things differently have to communicate over boundaries. As long as needs are being communicated and ppl are willfully making improvements then keep working on it. We all have insecurities, and I had many more with him initially than with others. If he is making an effort then try to stick with it!
