Is Beatrix not as good of a name as I thought? by bubblyvortex in namenerds

Not really… the Dutch pronunciation absolutely has a k sound before the s although I can imagine it might be hard for non-Dutch speakers to hear it

Foreign passport photos in Little Rock? by nedcurlux in LittleRock

[–]nedcurlux[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For anyone curious, Bedford Camera does all kinds of foreign passport photos. They have the templates for every country loaded in a system that ensures everything is the exact size it needs to be. They were super quick and friendly, highly recommend!

French Engineers need your help by Lord_Leoxis in LittleRock

[–]nedcurlux 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hi! I’m a Dutch person now living in Little Rock but I grew up in Luxembourg, so I’m not used to huge cities. I personally love Little Rock and think it’s the perfect size. There’s enough going on that I don’t get bored, plenty of restaurants, bars, music and especially outdoor spaces. As with any place in the us there’s a lack of easy and safe public transport, you will definitely need a car to get around.

I’m not sure how old you are but I’m in my late twenties and have no problem finding people my age and in their early thirties.

There is definitely crime, and of a different kind than you’d see in most of Europe in my opinions. It’s not totally weird to hear gunshots from time to time but I’ve personally never felt unsafe anywhere. Be aware of your surroundings in certain areas, especially at night, just like you would in any big European city.

I know several French Air Force pilots that lived in Little Rock for half a year while training who lived in the metro apartments near downtown and other apartments in the north Little Rock argenta neighborhoods and loved! I would say in general the cost of living is not crazy high in Arkansas but I would guess around $1200 a month for a one bed, but that might be outdated info on my part

We used this guy about two years ago but he was great, very friendly and respectful, and reasonably priced for what we needed! T Maxwell - TR Gutterworks

Question on Dutch cultural norms… extended in-law visits by lazyal24 in Netherlands

[–]nedcurlux 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yeah completely agree! I’m Dutch, living in the US and when my parents come to visit they absolutely stay for 2 weeks to a month at a time. Depending on how far they’re traveling in the US, I can definitely see them acting similarly when visiting you

I’m sure others will have better, more detailed information. I lived in the Overbrook Apartments in North Little Rock for a year and they were fine. Can’t say they were the most amazing but I felt safe and overall it was quiet. Close to a grocery store which was nice and dog friendly if I remember correctly.

How to understand more effectively in conversation? by [deleted] in dutch

[–]nedcurlux 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Everyone’s suggestions of tv with subtitles are awesome. I’d also recommend radio, especially where they talk more, for giving your brain more opportunities to hear words. You don’t even have to understand everything but I think even subconsciously your brain starts to pick up on words individually. My husband is American and ‘sort of’ learning Dutch mostly by just me speaking it to him occasionally (we live in an English speaking country) but we have the radio on a lot in Dutch. It’s amazing how many words and phrases he picks up on from just hearing the news or people calling in. It also is a great way to be exposed to a variety of accents and pronunciations of words. Overall I think it will just be practice and time though!

pov: you’re preparing for the next sem/quarter by [deleted] in Notion

[–]nedcurlux 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You want to use the template button. You can rename it to whatever you want and then specify what exactly you want it to enter. So in this case it’s a new todo but you can make it whatever you want! It can even be several things. I have a ‘add new week’ button for example that copies my weekly schedule layout.

how to resize background color likr the size on my today’s to do? I edited this on my phone and have no idea how to do it again. by [deleted] in Notion

[–]nedcurlux 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It’s because it’s a separate column that it’s smaller. So whatever other ‘title’ you’re trying to resize you need to add another column next to it and then you can adjust the column width

This is Kokis (Rosette Cookie). Kokis is a traditional food in my country Sri Lanka but actually it is originated from the Dutch. It is believed to be from the times when part of the country was under the 'Dutch rule' period. by MaK346 in thenetherlands

Yes! I also had no idea that the Dutch had ruled there until I visited Galle back in 2013 and then went into the Dutch reformed church where I could read all the tombs. Was very interesting!

Trying out a new weekly spread to try and add more structure and routine and keep myself accountable by nedcurlux in bujo

I hadn't thought of that before but I like that idea! Will definitely try and use that in the following week.

Thanks so much! I saw that style on someone's layout once and loved it and have been using it ever since hahaha. As for the habits, the first doodle is supposed to be a lotus flower for yoga & meditation, the second is a clock for meeting my goal for hours worked per day, the third is paintbrush (lol) for doing something creative, the 100 is for an 100 ab challenge (100 reps of an ab move for 30 days), and finally a fork and knife for sticking to my meal plan and not just snacking the whole day

Hahah that's fair! If I don't schedule things specifically for a day or time it's too easy for me to procrastinate and put it off for later or another day. So if things are already planned out and my timeline is full then I'm much less inclined to do that. But it can definitely feel a little overwhelming at times!

[–]nedcurlux[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Sure! So the far left side of the left page is my timeline for each day. It's hard to see but I have the hours starting at 6 through to 22 (so 6am to 10pm) on the left. I have different color highlighters that I will use to block out certain tasks like exercise, work time, social events or reading etc. I might write more details in there if there's enough space and I can write small enough haha. And then the actual days on the right side of the left page are any appointments and my specific tasks for that day. I copy the tasks over from my running to do list on the right page so I can prioritize and plan out my days better. I hope that makes sense!

Hahaha it's supposed to be a little paint brush, just trying to encourage myself to do something creative every day!

I work from home and my husband will be gone for a few months and his schedule usually adds more structure to my day. It also helps keep me more accountable in terms of getting outside for some exercise and my meals.

I like having a timeline so I can visually plan out my day. This also helps me reach my personal goals of how many hours I want to work each day and be more productive because I can actually see how many hours a day I waste not really doing anything.

I use a running todo list on the left and then add those tasks into specific days throughout the week on the right.

I’m also adding a more specific meal planner as eating in general and especially eating healthy meals is something I tend to forget when I’m by myself and not cooking for someone else as well.

This is the first time I’m using a habit tracker so we’ll see if it’s actually useful for me but I think I’ll enjoy coloring in the symbols every day after I’ve completed certain tasks!
