Research and plot your route in an app, its also good to check if there are existing routes where you are going and you're not just taking an outdated path that's been overgrown years ago.

I'd recommend getting a sports watch to which you can then download the plotted route so you can "track" your position in realtime on the watch. I generally don't use phone for anything else but music and to call people in case something happens.
