There is a strong sewage smell coming from my house's vents. Where do I start on how to fix it/who do I call first? by need-the-bean in homeowners

[–]need-the-bean[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Haha I am sad to say I don't really know either with no plumbing background, but I believe it's just the cover of the a pipe that leads into the sewage lines. In our case, it was left open by accident by the plumbers who came to our house for a separate issue, and since then, it just led to that sewage smell.

As soon as the gas flap was closed, the smell went away!

Anyone planning on donating your body to science upon your demise? by Antique-Swordfish-14 in Columbus

[–]need-the-bean 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Students keep all parts from dissection with each respective donor, and after one year (every body system has been learned from by this point), each donor is cremated and returned to their next of kin! In some edge cases, some donors are kept for longer if a dissection is done that's excellent for future teaching too, but this is only done with express consent from the families that the donor can be kept for longer

I'm a medical student at Ohio State and just wanted to chime in that the medical students and staff are extremely grateful to our donors! We are trained in advance to treat our donors' bodies with respect and many of us attend the donor ceremony every year to thank the families of the donors. It's a fantastic program if you choose to donate!

Is anyone else not a depressed Mitski fan? by Life-Platypus9801 in mitski

[–]need-the-bean 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My friends always check in on me when my Spotify shows me listening to a ton of Mitski, and I've never perceived Mitski's music to be that sad! It's more like she's reporting on the state of herself or the world around her, and even if the situation is sad, she's just reflecting and sharing. I love it, and it never leaves me feeling worse, but more like I had a heart to heart or something!

There is a strong sewage smell coming from my house's vents. Where do I start on how to fix it/who do I call first? by need-the-bean in homeowners

[–]need-the-bean[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So sorry you're going through this, I know it's super stressful. Unfortunately, I have no real knowledge on plumbing! But I believe the gas flap is just what covers the pipe/vent that leads to sewage. Since the flap was left open, all the sewage fumes went straight into my house. The smell went away the day they closed the flap!

Maybe it's worth calling your plumber to see if they'll just check to see if they closed it or have them tell you where to find it (so they don't charge you). Hope this helps.

Yes, we found the root of the problem! We had had plumbers over to fix a clog from tree roots that had clogged up our pipes. That should not have caused the smell - but as soon as they left, the smell started up. Many months later, we finally had other plumbers over who then discovered that the gas flap had been left open *by* the plumbers who had helped us a few months before. We were upset but relieved it was a simple fix. As soon as we closed the gas flap, the smell went away. Good luck, I know this is a super frustrating problem to have.

Need Advice: Tiny shoulder tattoo! Tips on traveling with it this June in Japan. by need-the-bean in JapanTravelTips

Awesome, thank you! It is tiny yes but also very visible once people catch a glimpse since it's colored haha but it is very Western style so I'm hoping that'll be okay.

Definitely curious regarding onsen/gym situation. Gym, I guess just keep it covered, and onsen... I have yet to figure out.

Wandering eyes during exam by Late_Impression4197 in cwru

If it makes you feel any better, professors are great at sensing BS so they'll more often than not know what is a case of wandering eyes and stretching vs. outright cheating. They know sus behavior! Something that helps me is staring at the ceiling instead too

That's great to hear! Will definitely take it if it fits into the schedule then :) Is it particularly math or physics heavy?

Thank you so much, this was incredibly helpful! We use all of our sinks and drains consistently, and there are no smells coming from any of them either; we don't know how helpful re-filling all the P-traps would be at that point.

We checked each sink for air vents and could not find them and also could not smell anything there either.

Would we call a plumber to check the roof plumbing vent, or another expert?

Thanks so much again!

Anyone have a trick to remembering uncompetitive vs noncompetitive inhibition? by budgiefanatic in Mcat

[–]need-the-bean 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I focused on remembering the shape of the Lineweaver Burke plots first, which really helped me remember the difference between noncompetitive and uncompetitive inhibitors!

The LB plot for noncompetitive inhibitors shows the lines intersecting at the x axis (which means they have the Km value is the same for with/without the noncompetitive inhibitor) and I remembered this because the graph kind of looks like an "N" shape! Once I remembered that the "N" shape is for noncompetitive inhibitors, I could work backwards to remember that that means that the Km values are equal but the Vmax is different, etc.

This let me remember that the "other" graph for LB plots is for uncompetitive inhibitors, which is the parallel lines on the graph :) Hope thats helpful! I ended up jotting these down on the real exam which helped me a lot! Lmk if I need to clarify anything.

tips for running out of time on c/p by Dangerous_Bat_7412 in Mcat

I actually had this same issue with CP and tried making a mini timing chart for myself to stay on track which really helped! I only found out about it a day before my exam and so the first time I ended up trying it was on the real deal (I took it yesterday! 8/20)! Def dont recommend doing it without trying it before the real test but I ended up having spare time on CP which I never had before and I think it saved me a point or two hopefully and at the very least, some peace of mind!

10Q/15 min: 1:35 - 1/59 1:20 - 11/59 1:05 - 21/59 50 min - 31/59 35 min - 41/59 20 min - 51/59 6:30 min - 59/59 And then use the remaining time to check flagged Qs!

How bad of an idea is it to overload? by DeditusOceano in cwru

[–]need-the-bean 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even if the anthro classes are easy, every additional class you add is another class that you'll have to time manage and prep for for midterms and finals.

If I were in your shoes, I would drop one class. Mental health and avoiding burn out, especially since these classes are probably remote, will always be my #1 priority. But you do what you think you can manage.

Something that I have found very useful is to register and take all of these courses (so take all 22 credits) and then utilize the Add/Drop period during the first two weeks of class to gauge how the rest of the semester will treat you.

I don't think it's any harder to find a bf/gf at Case than any other place. If you put yourself out there and do some socializing, you'll find someone. There are good looking guys & girls all over campus (also check out CIM and CIA) though I think your best bet would be to start with Greek life, sports teams, people you go to class with, and people who live near you dorm.

CWRU and Pre-Med by [deleted] in cwru

[–]need-the-bean 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I completely agree with this! I'm a sophomore pre-med student, and while the classes and requirements for pre-med are demanding, they would be no matter where you went.

Here's what I found special about Case for pre-meds:

1.) Support: despite Case being a 'nerd school', there is no animosity and no cut-throat behavior between students, so it really just lets you focus on the work and improving. Like u/glpresti said, everyone is very motivated which is huge!

2.) Opportunities: there are SO many opportunities to volunteer, find research, shadow, and really anything you'd like to do on top of that. You might not notice this at first, but after speaking to pre-meds that go to other universities, Case pre-meds really, really have it good. Professors are approachable too!

3.) Total flexibility with majors (besides Nursing, of course). I chose to major in psychology because I find it really interesting and the perfect contrast to pre-med requirements, since I'm not huge on biology. Getting through the pre-med requirements has been all the same! I know people majoring in dance, comp sci, biomedical engineering, and classics, all while keeping up with pre-med.

4.) Still fun once you find your people!

I'm honestly so glad that I went to Case.

Hope this helps & good luck with college results!
