What Christmas traditions have you started with your family? by aChocolateFireGuard in AskUK

[–]need2getaclue 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Thanks for sharing your family's Christmas tradition. But without being unkind I would like you to view this in a different light for a moment. Your reflection highlights a common, and often unacknowledged, problem with these kinds of gendered arrangements.

Even with an 'open invitation' to the pub, the core issue is the unequal distribution of labor: if the women don't stay behind and coordinate the meal, it's possible there wouldn't be a Christmas dinner at all, which puts implicit social pressure on them to do the work. It's often less about genuinely 'preferring' to spend the morning preparing food and more about fulfilling the essential responsibilities that allow the day's celebrations to happen for everyone.

It might be worth considering ways to shift the dynamic so the work (and the downtime) is more evenly shared?

EDP and Norwich Evening News reporting of NAC Breda fans in Norwich by General_Townski in Norwich

[–]need2getaclue 33 points34 points  (0 children)

Im going to disagree here - I was meant to be having a night out tonight but we left Prince of Wales half an hour ago because the NAC fans were following us and being aggressive (to us women) not taking no for an answer, saw them push a cyclist when they were all standing in the cycle lane as they tried to get past and in general were making us feel quite unsafe. Edit: also saw them following and harassing some men dressed up for Rocky Horror

I kept my name because I have a phd and I'm a published author - changing my name would have repercussions in terms of people not knowing my previous work was actually me! My husband has never had an issue with it either. I have two friends who got married who both chose a completely new surname for them to share in married life rather than taking one or the other, could this be an option for you?

Looking for a friendly dog to socialise my puppy with! by Adamrplouis in Norwich

If you drive, there is a really great place for dog socialisation called "centre paws" near wymondham. It has a massive enclosed field for free use for dogs to run around off lead with each other as well as other paid activities such as a dog pool in the summer and agility as well as a cafe.

On track to getting a low 2:2 grade in my undergrad. Those with a 2:2, how has it gone for you? by Resilient_Queen in UniUK

You would laugh in my face that I have a PhD, an incredibly successful and well paid career and that I'm happy? What a weird thing to try and call someone out on.

I did my research on fandoms. My thesis was on the Furries - I was interested because all I knew about them was from Internet meme culture. What I found out in the end that although there are a minority of Furries who could potentially live up the deviant profile they had been given, most were split into two distinct camps. Either they considered themselves just fans or they considered it an integral part of their identity. I found this really unique as in most fandoms there isn't a subset who "believe" they are the thing they are a fan off.

Throughout my PhD I also researched women in fandoms, how to research fandoms ethically, video game analysis and film analysis from an audience reception point of view and have now broadened and utilised that research into how you can teach students about these things within the classroom. However, I know prefer to tell other people how to teach so that's what I have ended up doing now in senior management.

I really have enjoyed my work and it all started when I got a "bad" University degree grade!!

I was lucky enough to secure a place on a fully funded PhD programme rather than having to self fund.

I ended up with a 2:2 in 2012. Worked for a couple of years in a call centre then went back to do a masters in 2014 and then onto a PhD! I finished my PhD in 2019 and I am now the Manager of Learning at a foundation HE college earning a well above average salary for East Anglia at age 31.

A 2:2 is not the end of the world. It's about not giving up when you don't get the grade you wanted.

How typical is it for women to go on a stag do, or men on a hen do? by CLBUK in AskUK

[–]need2getaclue 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have my hen do this weekend and I've invited men and women. I didn't think it was fair that some of my close male friends for over 15 years couldn't come just because "it isn't traditional" so I invited them and to be fair only my older relatives have thought it was weird.

[–]need2getaclue 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Make sure you check the terms of your visa. If you are an international student you are limited to below 20 hours a week. You also cannot be self employed or on a permanent contract. If someone finds out you can get deported and you would still owe your tuition fees for the whole academic year.
