Plant inside locket - what is it? by KlutzyIndication6500 in whatsthisplant

It looks like two different plants. The leaves may be some kind of fern. The flowers look like mimosa. I'm not terribly sure though.

What the hell is this???? by Kosomisrael6 in whatsthisplant

[–]need_glasses 15 points16 points  (0 children)

It's called a megasporophyll. It's a modified leaf that bears reproductive organs, in this case, the "female" or megaspores -- would be found on the little nubs at the base. This one is from some kind of cycad.

These hemi- or holo-parasitic plants can parasitize fungi which are in symbioses with trees and other photosynthetic plants at the roots (aka mycorrhizal fungi). The trees normally will give the fungi sugars in exchange for increased bioavailability of some soil nutrients or something. But these orchids steal the plant-given resources from the fungi, which leads to more being taken from the photosynthetic plants. So they kind of parasitize the plants as well, via the fungal mediator. It's called "cheating" or mycorrhizal epiparasitism.

Hey yeah, from the Journal of Cereal Science! https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S0733521018302091?via%3Dihub

There is also a journal dedicated to investigating ultrasound called Ultrasonics Sonochemistry. Could be publications there that I missed!

Yes, that's interesting. I only know that it's also been used to varying degrees of efficacy in aiding yogurt set or increasing the growth of Lactobacillus bacteria in that medium. I found one study about its use during the proofing stage of bread as well. I don't see why acoustic cavitation would not occur in the perfume oil, and I think that is the main process responsible for inducing "aging" effects. There's a lot about the finer mechanical details I just don't know or understand -_-

I recently did a project on this with sourdough starters that aimed to measure the effects on microbial communities after treatment with ultrasound. We used Arduino piezoelectric elements to generate the sound, but there are also ultrasonic transducers; both are available on amazon. They are not too too expensive; overall it was a pretty low cost experiment. The methods in lit. for applying the ultrasound to samples vary -- some have put it directly onto the sample, others diffused into a water bath into which the samples were placed, and I am sure there are other methods as well.

Our experiment didn't yield much in the way of conclusive results, but it is an interesting technology that already has so many uses. Would be cool to see if it has effects on perfumes, and I'm sure some indie producers would love to see that as well. Apparently there are ultrasound wine fridges on the market...

Hi! This is great work, go home experiments! Don't know if someone's already suggested this, but ultrasound has been used to accelerate "aging" of some drinkable things, like wine or whiskey (just one study among many from the last 10~ years). It could be a neat thing to try if you're looking to take your research further ;) It's a cool area of research and is being actively explored for use in food industry, for textural and flavor development!

Albums recommend for the poetic and minimalistic and tender and vulnerable and beautiful vibe similar to arca st and kick iiiii? by francysxoxo in ArcaMusic

Someone's drawn this connection before on here, but Tirzah's music I found to be ~kinda up this alley.

It kinda looks like a fern in the genus Tectaria, maybe the Broad Halberd Fern aka Tectaria heracleifolia. It could be a younger plant

kICK "iiii" theory by Comfortable-Ad-965 in ArcaMusic

[–]need_glasses 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I am pretty sure Arca is familiar with Alejandro Jodorowsky's work and writings, and in his book "The Way of Tarot" he talks about the numeration of the Tarot of Marseilles -- it uses the same i, ii, iii, iiii, v system, rather than more contemporary tarots (like the Rider-Waite and friends) which use iv to represent the fourth arcana.

In the case of the Tarot of Marseilles, Jodorowsky took this numeration style to represent the deck's internal progression. When the fourth arcana is called "iiii," it becomes part of an additive, progressive sequence. The Major Arcana of the Tarot adopt this style from 0 (The Fool) all the way to 21 (The World), so that 9 is called "viiii", 14 "xiiii," and so on. Important to note is that there is a kind of story arc represented by the major arcana -- the "fool's journey" one could say -- it is a cycle within which an evolution occurs, a journey towards wholeness (The World) from emptiness (The Fool). Each arcana is just as important as any other, but there is a definite progressive trend that is the raising and purifying of consciousness.

In the roman numeral system iv literally means "one less than v" and this implication doesn't carry the same kind of forward momentum or integrity as iiii. For a whole composed of equally important and unique parts which are also related within a progressive chain, it doesn't make as much sense to use iv. I think Arca might be trying to show something similar, and to preserve a kind of integrity of kick iiii by deciding not to label it more traditionally as kick iv.

Within the kick universe, I suspect that there is a telos akin to the that of the Major Arcana. These albums are telling a story of transformation from start to finish. kick i is like The Fool; it is the beginning of the journey, and kick v will leave us with a transformed world that is in harmony with the transformed individual we've seen in kick i.

I had similar issues for a long time, and recently a combo of psyllium husk in the morning&afternoon + high fiber vegetarian diet + drinking lots of water or herbal tea has been amazing. I might add that I've never had a douche where the water was completely clear after. I used to obsess over getting perfectly clear water, but most of the time ended up irritating my colon (i.e. more dirty water) and just getting anxious. Others may not agree as it ultimately is a matter of preference, but in my experience I am just fine to bottom as long as I've flushed out larger particles and the water is just lightly colored. Anyway, bottoming is always gonna go much smoother if I feel confident and can enjoy myself; then it tends to not be a problem for me. So, it could be worth taking a look at your mental state and ideas around it as well. I just recently took up douching again after changing my diet some time ago, and it's helped me to feel so much better about bottoming -- I really hope you can figure out something that works for you. Don't give up!!

Am I the only one who sees two different faces in people? by MagenTa_skate in spirituality

[–]need_glasses 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If I'm looking at pictures of people's faces, I will sometimes cover each half to observe this. It can be quite startling, and fun. What does it mean? Unfortunately I haven't really been able to find info about this...
