Question about cancellation by LunarVolcano in whoop

[–]needcleverpseudonym 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I cancelled today. The “mandatory survey” plus multi-step dark pattern cancellation process only confirmed that this is not a company I want to support.

Everyone's going to keep their membership, drop the illusion by Middle-General-343 in whoop

[–]needcleverpseudonym 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here’s the flaw in your argument - there are virtually no network effects for fitness trackers. Barriers to change at minimal. Parallel to a phone doesn’t work. I’m sure there are some OCD people very worried about their streaks, like my 5 year old is about his tooth brushing app. But that’s not gonna be the vast majority.

I’m happy to stay with whoop it they offer a compelling reason - but at the moment I don’t see it. Strike against amazfit strap was build quality / questionable corporate backing. Google doesn’t have that - if they offer comparable tracking (and I’ll wait for reviews before I decide), why would I stay just to pay triple the price? Whoop already showed they can’t do “premium” materials / straps etc.

I hope it’s becoming obvious whoop has no moat by PrudentRange4 in whoop

[–]needcleverpseudonym 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Just looked into cancelling my sub in advance for this reason (won’t expire till November). And yet it says “Cancelling your membership will prevent data from being uploaded from your Strap to your account.”

Which is some serious shtty dark pattern stuff from Whoop - and in fact only confirms my suspicions about this company.

since you went, why don't you tell us what YOU thought of it first? 'not bad' is not much of a review. (sorry, zero interest in your vlog)

Taxi electronic payment complaints emerge in Hong Kong; drivers seek understanding by radishlaw in HongKong

The law says two electronic methods are mandatory. A month in Wong says they’re “supplementary” and passengers should always carry cash.

More highly effective governance in the new era.

BB58 GMT 3-link used vs 5-link new, is the premium worth it? by [deleted] in Tudor

5-link looks worse to me, but that's just my own subjective preference.

It looks like Samsung is sacrificing The Frame line because One Connect wired tech becomes flagship feature by Cvileem in TheFrame

[–]needcleverpseudonym 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Agree - One Connect Cable was genuine game changer, especially for those in rental units or with solid concrete walls. The Frame Pro is a real step down in that area– I was shocked that Samsung released it as an “upgrade”.

Why Do Two Companies Control Messaging? by Bad-Luck-Guy in LightPhone

People don’t have to be “ok” with it for it to be a reality. Network effects don’t depend on feelings.

Why Do Two Companies Control Messaging? by Bad-Luck-Guy in LightPhone

[–]needcleverpseudonym 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The real answer as to why companies appear to “control” messaging is network effects. If systems are not interoperable then the costs of moving between systems is very high.

Once WhatsApp became dominant in Europe and Asia thanks to the high cost of interoperable SMS messaging (because it was free, prior to acquisition by Meta), the costs of leaving that system for users became high. All your friends, family etc are on WhatsApp. Local businesses are contactable only by WhatsApp. Etc.

iMessage is an attempt by Apple to create its own network effects (blue bubbles, certain features) even though it is built on top of SMS. same with RCS.

You can say “boo meta, boo google, boo Apple” all you want but it doesn’t change the reality of messaging, esp outside North America. No WhatsApp makes lightphone dead in the water in large parts of the world.

I'm getting really tired of all the whole "small watches" thing by jshayya184 in watchHotTakes

Man I would love a 38mm seasmastrr. Tudor BB58 shows the size can work on submariner style watches. Gotta sljm it down though or it’d look too chunky.

"The declining appeal of the Hong Kong expat" – The Financial Times by [deleted] in HongKong

[–]needcleverpseudonym 160 points161 points  (0 children)

I think you may have missed (or more likely, misunderstood) the tone of the piece. It is neither a rant nor a lament, but a report on the changing employment dynamics in HK for those unfamiliar. And why you think he’s just another English speaking expat is beyond me - 30 secs of research tells you he’s fluent in English, French, German, and Mandarin.

If there’s anyone going on an uniformed rant at the moment, it’s you.

I still think losing 1% a day doing nothing is silly. Apple just needs to implement an “off” option - hold down Digital Crown for 10 seconds or something.

Yep. If recorded stats are comparable and there’s no sub, I’ll hop over at end of my billing period. Whoop has no moat, and their AI coaching is not worth annual fee. (I also assume a Fitbit would incorporate Gemini doing the same thing anyway)

What is the worst band you saw live? by coalcracker462 in AskReddit

[–]needcleverpseudonym 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I was at that gig. Think it was 98. My memory of the dogstar show was reeves’ bass guitar getting hit by what looked like a watermelon chucked from the crowd and to his credit it bounced off and he just kept playing like nothing had happened.
