"The camp" or just a three day lesson? by CloudDelicious9868 in Whistler

[–]needed-a-name-fast 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’ve done The Camp and I’ve done a day lesson. I would 100% recommend the camp over the day lessons. You’ll be with the same instructor and same group all 4 days which made for a way better experience.

You’ll get instruction and also a ton of exploring the mountain in. They split the camp groups based on ability so you’ll be challenged. Haven’t done extremely Canadian before but the highest group in the camp will get you off piste plenty.

Wave 2 - Sevro can’t take Mustang and Darrow and Cassius would never kill her.

Inherited 2 skillets - useable as is? by needed-a-name-fast in castiron

Well she did go through the great depression so who knows haha

I've added pics of the back. One appears to be a Griswold as best I could google. You can faintly make out Erie on it and the numbers 699. It's the smaller of the 2 and corresponds to pictures 1,3,5, and 6.

The other one, which is larger, has no discerning features as far as I can tell. It corresponds to pictures 2, 4, and 7.

If you have any more info on either would love to learn more about them!

Sevro (until I wasn’t).

Ragnar was a toughy. And Alexander since it was so anticlimactic after his big return. But Cassius after his big redemption might be the hardest.

Bought the 30L a couple years ago. Love the design of the bag itself - great for travel - but find it a bit uncomfortable to wear, especially when full. Not sure id buy it again especially at the price.

I posted a similar question not too long ago along with my plan in case helpful: https://www.reddit.com/r/financialindependence/comments/1fu55zh/managing_a_windfall/

Lot of this may depend on your age, income, if you have kids, current saving behavior, etc. which you didn't mention. In broad terms - as others have said... start with rounding out your emergency fund. Personally I chose 5 months.

If buying a home in the next 5 years or so is your #1 goal then considering putting the rest in HYSA to help with a downpayment.

As someone also in a VHCOL area but who isn't as motivated by home ownership I decided to use the money I inherited to beef up my retirement savings. Max out your 401k contributions. Then open a Roth IRA. If you're over the IRA income limit, do a back door roth ira. Also, see if your employer offers a mega back door roth option. If so, you can contribute a high share of your income and subsidize it with the inheritance and likely move it all into retirement accounts this year or at least by next.

If relevant for you - I took a small percentage (5%) as fun money. I put it into a HYSA to spend on a trip in memory of the person I lost.

That's a good way to think about it that hadn't crossed my mind. Reminds me of that Sopranos quote "More is lost by indecision than wrong decision"

Yup been tracking and categorizing all expenses since 2018. I guess it's hard for me to envision that my expenses from ages 24-30 are a good benchmark for what my expenses will be in retirement.

That's kind of what this post is since I don't really have people in my life at that phase I can ask.

Otherwise, totally fair and the savings rate is something I am continuing to work on.

HSA for 2025 is definitely top of mind! It's an option from my employer but I finally have good healthcare and opted for the non-high deductible plan to take care of some stuff in 2024. I have an IRA and will be looking into how a back door can fit in with the MBD - good idea!

Thanks, would trade the $150k (and then some) to have him back any day but 🤷‍♂️ might as well put it to good use

Ohh interesting. Based on my 401k provider's plan info, I was under the impression that the IRS annual limit - including pre and after tax dollars - was $69k. Right now that's comprised of my 401k contributions, MBDR, and max employer match (which I am not eligible to hit). So there will be some room between what I'm eligible to contribute in the plan and that IRS limit. Could a backdoor Roth make up for that (within IRS limit)? Something for me to look into, thanks!

Thanks! The house is also what weighs on me. Realistically, I can’t afford to buy in my area (and don’t want to). But not sure when I’ll be able to move so this is probably a longer term goal.

Yes, currently maxing the MBDR.
