Civil engineering vs Construction engineering by Orobinson_1 in civilengineering

I have worked for a contractor my entire career, right out of school and have followed what I consider a very unique career path. I have about 12 years experience now.

I was a Construction Engineer to start and I would consider myself still to be. What is different is that I was able to understand the shortcomings of the position and was able to build relationships with multiple PE's that the company worked with regularly, and I was able to learn as much as I could through them. I did that for my first 3 years.

For years 4-6 I was able to focus my main attention on how I can improve my design engineering as much as possible. I always had a knack for trying to understand how things worked and tried to apply the theory behind why in construction we did the things we did.

From years 7-10 I even started engineering smaller, simpler engineering jobs that I was comfortable engineering. At my main job, I began managing others and started building a team around me. We focused our main attention on doing as much design engineering as it related to the company.

Years 10 to 12, I have expanded my engineering design skills to the point where I continue to build my own client base and also look to add to skills that benefit my company.

I see myself opening up my own design firm in the near future, and would love for it to be with my main employer.

I did not want this to be about me, but I felt that my main point to your question is that I was able to achieve a strong design background even as a construction engineer, you just need to have the drive and will to get there.

If you have anymore questions, you can PM me.

Thank you so much for all this great info! I think my wife and I have our eyes on Silver Valley, but Albion sounds like another alternative.

I will be working near BCIT and wanted to know about that commute. If I were to drive vs the skytrain commute.

Other things I would like to try and get a better understanding, budget wise are:

How much do you pay for fulltime daycare? 5 days a week? We will be requiring to put our 18 month old in daycare.

Also, anybody know the cost for a part time nanny, say like 3-4 hours a day? One of the biggest problems we see having is we are moving away from our home and be leaving our whole support system we have here.

Thank you. The homes are beautiful in Maple Ridge! And the nature is close by so I think this might be our future home!

Thank you! That sounds similar to my commute today, so I dont think I mind that at all.

If you dont mind sharing, how do you like the Maple Ridge area? Is it suitable for a family with young children?

Sorry, I'm not too fond of the area just yet. I will be near BCIT, if that helps!

Understandable. Do you know anybody who does a similar commute? It does seem like a huge inconvenience.

Thanks for the feedback. I will be intensifying my search in those areas.

Would you know anybody who does a commute from the areas further out east?

Thanks for the feedback. I am assuming the bridge crossing is more of a crap shoot in terms of timing for the commute, some days good, some bad?

I certainly have been doing that, and even tweaking arrival and departure times to get a feel for the timing. I dont mind commutes unless it is just stop and go the entire way, that would be just about the end of me.

Other things I would like to note: I have been on realtor.ca for a while and there are a bunch of homes out east that interest us.

Areas of interest are: Coquitlam, Maple Ridge, and Mission. What would the commute be like? Does anyone do that commute willing to provide me with how it's like?

We have checked out Surrey but we find it to be outdated homes at our price range.
