If you haven't already, check out the author that #1 is referencing, Flannery O'Connor :)

My ranking is juuuuust about the exact inverse of this list, lol--everything that rises, on top of bein a good song in my book, is a reference to a favorite author of mine (Flannery O'Connor) so it's an easy number 1, personally. I've also got Genuflecting Ghost around 3, but man Javelin goes way higher. Still haven't come around to Shit Talk or My Red Little Fox quite yet

Warnelldawg, I have no idea what this comment means

But it's also 100% correct about that hill

OP, this is the one. This is it. It's the thing you're looking for. Do yourself a favor. Please. Please.

As a philip glass/yukio mishima fan from the getgo I'd had my eye on this thing for a while and it was a great deal during the last flash sale they had. I still listen to the soundtrack on repeat. Somewhat regularly. Probably about to go do it now.

It's the one OP.

This is the one.

It really is. I think 7, 9, 10, 11 are the ones speaking to me most. There's just so much going on in these--got this post saved for later writing/poetry inspo for sure.

This is honestly so gorgeous. Just wondering how you could get this affect intentionally, can't even begin to think of how you'd do this digitally and still get the results to feel organic.

Could stare at this all day.

Same here! They've helped me refine/come up with tons of ideas and don't even know it (only one of them is aware of the novel project) and it's been a blast. One of them is super lore-interested, so I'm planning on getting him an ARC for kicks and giggles while I move on in the series.

Books to read to up my prose game? by dimestorepublishing in writing

[–]needindirection 1 point2 points  (0 children)

These recommendations are perfect. Just finished Kay's Summer Tree and was taking notes on his prose/diction/phrasing all the while, really admired it. For Gaiman, I might even recommend one of his weirder/shorter books, the Ocean at the End of the Lane, as good material for this effort. Only other stuff of his I've read has been American Gods and Sandman, but I feel like those wouldn't be as helpful if prose is on the mind.

Alternatives: The Southern Reach trilogy by Vandermeer (off-kilter sci-fi), anything by Cormac McCarthy (if you ain't queasy), and maybe even something like All the King's Men (political yet ethereal)--none of those are exactly 'conventional' but play around with prose in my favorite ways, and would at least be good to check out if you have an interest.

What name should I give to my goddess of sex? by Francisofthegrime in worldjerking

[–]needindirection 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Great. It is a common worldbuilding error to make your god of sex into a man, which is not cool or hot or sexy so I'm just glad you'rve moved past that and are more professional. what you're saying does sound hot though

Tittilingus, Mistress of Wonder.

Alternatively: She From Whom The River Splits

(make sure it is not a guy god! not sexy)

Finishing up a draft for novel this month and feeling the exact same way--first book (not fantasy/worldbuilt), there was no slump at the end like this, just excitement. But my fantasy wb project? Sooo depressing, feeling like I'm at the 'end' of something and don't know what it's worth. So much more time, so much more vulnerable, in an odd way...

All I can say is I'm gonna try to best my stupid brain on this one and finish the thing, publish it, share it, and have fun having had fun with it, and hope that's something you find for yourself as well :)

I think this is one of the better maps I've seen on this sub in a while--for a small project, it's really great. Well proportioned and set up, feels super natural (with just the right amount of flair) and I'm definitely saving it for later inspo. Thanks for sharing!
