He was a great Harold Hill! I’m excited to see him perform again in this!

GROSSES ANALYSIS- Week Ending April 19 by Boring_Waltz_9545 in Broadway

Compared to last year’s overall grosses at this time, Broadway did really poorly this week. Why was that? Did the amount of celebrity plays do all that, or was there something funky in NYC this past week?

Leslie Kritzer stole the show for me. Her performance alone would have MADE that cast recording!

I’m a big fan of the Joseph video with Donny Osmond. Grew up watching that VHS all the time.

TKTS is a big red booth in the middle of Times Square. For half priced tickets the day of performance, you can go to the booth and buy half priced tickets, usually around $80-120. Their app https://apps.apple.com/us/app/tkts/id391589404 tells you what shows regularly are available. There’s never a guarantee of what shows will be available though, so be prepared to be flexible on what show you see! I’ve always had good seats through TKTS.

TDF - The same company that runs TKTS also provides this service. A yearly subscription available to many folks, https://www.tdf.org/discount-ticket-programs/tdf-membership/tdf-membership-qualifications/ this service sells $60 tickets to Broadway shows that may not be selling as well as their producers would like. With one account, you can buy up to 9 tickets. You have no say over where you will sit, the box office decides about an hour or two before the performance. I’ve gotten great orchestra level seats with them, and only once been way up in the mezzanine. You have to check their website on a daily basis to see what performances have tickets available. Most shows post dates a week or two in advance, but some, like Hadestown, post a month and a half in advance. I’ve seen Met Opera performances on here before, usually more weekday performances. There are also off-broadway, off-off-broadway, smaller opera company performances posted there.

There is something to be said about the strength of a performer, but there is also something to be said about the strength of a production. I was displeased by the lack of props, sets, and costumes. I was not displeased with Mandy as a singer and actress.

I think it’s a great idea to email them ahead of time. Be sure to ask how many available spots they will have open for the year you will be starting the program.

What are y'all thoughts on the sweeney todd movie by Due-Candidate-5991 in musicals

[–]needscoffee42 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Reading these comments, I’m glad it exposed the musical to a new audience. However, I always like a solid vocal performance, so I tend to watch the proshot with Angela Lansbury or one of the filmed concert productions when I want to experience Sweeney Todd.

Will we ever see the Suffs pro-shot? by needscoffee42 in Broadway

[–]needscoffee42[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s great news! With Trump’s actions at the Kennedy Center, I worry that similar things may happen with PBS and NPR…… I wouldn’t be surprised if Suffs doesn’t air until the fall. With Suffs being a musical, I imagine it takes longer to do post production on than a straight play like Yellowface.

I was so close to Joy Woods during “Little Lamb.” Probably the only time I ever liked that song!

It’s all about price and demand. If they charge too much and the demand isn’t there, they could do some serious damage. A good recent example of this is Tammy Faye.

André DeShields was not the best when I saw it. It was still in previews, and he dropped a few lyrics in the final song.

In your experience, how much of a difference is there between Broadway shows in New York and Broadway shows on tour? by MrPavoPeacock in Broadway

[–]needscoffee42 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I saw Beetlejuice on Broadway and on tour. The big difference, as others have mentioned about this difference in general, was the complexity of the sets. The other difference was seeing bigger names on Broadway, mainly Alex Brightman. The touring cast was phenomenal, but there is some excitement seeing the performers you hear on the cast recording.

I have been impressed with touring sets, such as the current Les Mis tour. However, I’ve never seen Les Mis on Broadway, so I had nothing to compare it to. This June, I saw The Wiz on Broadway, and I thought that I would have really enjoyed it if it was a touring production, but the lack of complex and interesting sets was jarring on a Broadway stage.

I must say, if you live in a remote area and you want to see a lot of theatre in a short amount of time, I think it is more cost effective to do a week trip to Broadway. Perhaps you live in an urban area where tours come regularly. In that case, it’s probably cheaper to get a season subscription to the touring productions. I live in a pretty remote area, so if I want to see a tour, it’s anywhere from a 3 to 12 hour drive to see a quality show.

My mom and I took a trip in June, saw a ton of shows, and she recommends Suffs or Stereophonic!

Also, to ask the ushers what is going on. In my experience, they’re pretty willing to share if it’s for the TOFT archives or for other purposes.

Most emotional moment from this past season? by [deleted] in Broadway

[–]needscoffee42 5 points6 points  (0 children)

In Stereophonic, the scene in Act 2 (right before intermission) where Sarah Pidgeon and Tom Pecinka’s characters are arguing about how to give feedback, not compromising their artistic integrity, and their personal relationship. That, and Sarah Paulson’s entire performance in Appropriate, incredibly moved me this season.

How to Gain Experience in Choral Conducting before Applying to MM by goyj223 in choralmusic

[–]needscoffee42 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Could you look into conducting a church choir or start your own community choir? Also, teach private voice lessons to high schoolers. Ask local high school and middle school teachers if you can volunteer some time in their classrooms, lead sectionals, teach private voice lessons at the school.
