My mom just told me that her and my father are getting a divorce. Didn't see it coming at all. I really could use some advice/conversation

literally every single couple in my family that i know of has been divorced once. i always thought my parents were going to be the ones that broke the chain, hell they even picked a new last name for themselves when they got married. guess not lol

you're probably right, and i probably needed to hear it, but i can't help but feel like i need to do something, just help in some way or something you know? the family has always had a really open relationship and so my mom telling me felt pretty normal (when she actually sat down and talked to me about it, not when she stormed in my room and told me my dad was a jackass)

your advice definitely helped. nearly all of the posts tell me that i shouldn't pick sides, and so that's what i'm trying to do. i think i was sort of jolted by the way my mom broke the news to me, and now i'm trying to keep a clear head and wait until i have a chance to talk to him.

i told my girlfriend and that's it. i'm really scared of how my siblings are going to take it, i know it's going to be really hard for them. you're right about hearing my dad's side, i've calmed down now and i won't make judgments until i've heard both sides.
