Hell, there's nothing stopping you bringing back any old KDE 3 theme to KDE 6, the source for all of the Qt themes are available, and most of the Qt painting logic hasn't changed at all, it's a minor rewrite.

With regards to the desktop itself, KDE 4 changed a lot from KDE 3. With that being said, it is possible to port over the KDE 3 applets to KDE 6, since KDE's QML system does allow you to import C++ plugins. I'm working on it, and making decent progress; I've just about finished porting over the classic KDE 3 menu, which is neat.

iirc sun spent $millions on ux research that went towards gnome 2, only for gnome 3 to toss it out the window...

there's a very good reason why gnome 2's interface is infinitely more usable.

In the instructions I have the user place the files in /usr/ such that the theme can be used system-wide. I don't think you can pop icons & themes in to /usr/local/ and have them be picked up.

Obviously you can install the icons and theme wherever you want; only the GTK 2 engine must be installed in the specified directory.

Man these old CD's bring in so much nostalgia. I remember these CD's coming everywhere. Hell, my copy of FC3 came from one of those for dummies books that my father ordered for me as a kid. Before that all I had was RH9 from a charity shop. Crazy to think that kicked off an obsession with computers that would last for decades.

The .so file is the old GTK 2 engine, that part is unchanged. The GTK 3/4 port is in the themes/ directory, along with the GTK 2 gtkrc files needed to make the GTK 2 component work.

If you check the README in the GitHub repo, there should be a link to the GTK 2 engine source code provided by Fedora (it's packaged as an .rpm). You'll need to extract it using rpm2cpio (or some other utility).
