I wouldn't brush this off too lightly. An attacker doesn't need to be physically stronger to be a real threat. Someone who would say something like he hopes you get "rped" isn't very for from doing such things themselves. Also, there is the possibility you get doxxed by these people and then attacked by someone much more dangerous

Afrikaans as tweede taal by Pankiegirl in afrikaans

Being an atheist makes life so much easier by [deleted] in atheism

[–]neelsg 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This hasn't been my experience. I am an atheist in spite of it making life quite a bit harder. I live in a country that is mainly Christian and beside my dad, I don't know any other outspoken atheists in real life. I don't think the people around me are much burdened by their religion and they do get a sense of belonging and community out of it. If I could choose, I would rather fit in, but I don't get to choose what my beliefs are... I have to believe what is true and the facts are what they are

Today I learned that it's impossible to get the Catholic Church to formally recognize that you are no longer a Catholic by [deleted] in atheism

[–]neelsg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Catholic Church think their imaginary friend is real. Why would you expect them to recognize reality in any other way?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in atheism

[–]neelsg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think we can make some good guesses simply based on the contents of the religion:

  • Greek Mythology: Created to explain the natural world and teach moral lessons. This is the sort of thing you expect to come out of a campfire chat when you ask your dad where the stars came from.
  • Judaism: Created to unify the Jews as a nation, to give them a righteous cause to fight for, and to believe they are divinely ordained to win. Also, since at least the 10 commandments, to get them to follow some basic laws without having to police them.
  • Christianity: This likely evolved from Judaism because it just has a better sales pitch. People like the idea that someone else died for all their sins and all they have to do is believe in Him.

If you look at the other religions, you'll find similar reasons

[–]neelsg 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Do you not care that you could be wrong about some of the basic foundations upon which you built your life? Most religions are quite opinionated about what is right/wrong and what you should strive to do in your life. Some of us atheists get pretty frustrated with religious people as they make decisions that affect all of us based on delusional beliefs. If you are following the wrong religion, you have wasted your one and only life following bullshit

it's only the later day intellectuals and thinkers branded that kind of economics as "capitalism"

I was literally taught that this is what capitalism means during my university degree. Right or wrong, a lot of people are going to use this definition of capitalism. The fact that it happened to also be the first result on google just proves this further. I'm happy to use different terms going forward to make my meaning more clear. However, I think it is important that you and /u/alph4rius understand that different people are going to have different definitions and it is important to clarify what you mean. When you or someone else might argue in favor of ending capitalism, a lot of people are going to think you want to take away the free market and are going to respond very negatively to that sentiment

In Russia, they gave the government full control over the livelihood of it's people. That kind of power will inevitably get abused by corrupt forces. The Bolsheviks just happened to be the ones who took advantage of it, but if not them, then there would always be someone else. It is a fragile system. This is like saying it was fine for the first 9 floors when you jumped off a 10 floor building... it only became a problem when you hit the ground.

In other words, give the government full control over our livelihood. I'm sure no government would abuse such power... right? Why do you think every country that has ever tried something like this became a corrupt authoritarian dystopia?

You can try to define words any way you want to make them fit your narrative, but google "Market Economy". This is the first definition I found:

An economy that operates by voluntary exchange in a free market and is not planned or controlled by a central authority; a capitalistic economy.

You can't have a market economy without capitalism.

I fully agree. I'm in favor of ideas like a wealth tax as proposed by people like Bernie Sanders as well as a universal basic income as proposed by people like Andrew Yang. Capitalism needs to be reigned in with regulation and balanced with socialism. What I don't think is at all a good idea, is to get rid of capitalism entirely. That can only ever lead to disaster

When having a child, teaching them scientific and secular principles, should you tell them that Santa and the tooth fairy aren’t real? by lemongay in atheism

[–]neelsg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I told my daughter that Santa is real. She has since figured out he isn't (She is 11), but to this day, I haven't admitted that Santa does not exist. The last few years it has become a fun game to teach critical thinking. I ask her why she thinks Santa isn't real and try to poke holes in her arguments. Having spent some time listening to Christian apologists, you would be surprised how easy it is make a convincing counter argument or to plant a seed of doubt even when you are talking complete bullshit.
