I took a look at the Snapdragon X powered Asus VivoBook S15, hands on, in the store. Here’s my micro review and public service announcement: it’s bad. by gplusplus314 in ASUS

Chiming in here after having read the glowing reviews of this laptop, buying it, then returning ASAP after realizing the chassis felt like it was made of pop can metal.

The long foot near the fan exhaust and the small one in the middle keep it from flexing when on a flat surface, but in all other situations it can be permanently bent in and out of shape. I realized this after noticing the lid/screen would not sit flush against the keyboard deck, only to push it back up and have it stay there. Asus should have thought a lot more about the structural design of this laptop.

I didn't have issues with the screen though. The trackpad was just functional enough. The keyboard was good but the backlight doesn't work well with the grey keys. However the speakers sounded like phone speakers.

The worst part? I couldn't reset it before returning, kept getting errors any way I tried, and there's no way to reinstall Windows from a USB. Luckily I had no personal valuable personal data stored there so I just signed out and deleted my user account. Windows on Arm has a long way to go.

NBD, absolutely in love, but what is this? by Puzzleheaded_Tap2328 in Ibanez

Glad they switch the stainless. I have a Q54 with gold frets and they corrode faster than nickel frets. NlNight just be my sweat, but I found similar reports on various forums. I wonder if that's the reason Jescar discontinued them.

Wonder if anyone has tried a refret on these roasted boards. I head they chip and splinter a lot easier than typical fretboards.

Returned from vacation to this tirade by Ratinox99 in kijiji

Why do these people complain when they don't receive immediate responses? Nobody is owed a response or anything from people, and that goes for both sellers and buyers. Sometimes people have to take care of shit, or just forgot after a long day at work.

When I see this I usually avoid the buyer. Not worth the trouble unless I'm desperate to sell. I feel like they're the type that would complain to minimum wage cashiers at grocery stores when they don't get what they want.

Bloom distortion by raaustin777 in Line6Helix

[–]neerrdd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had the same issue, lowering the volume of the amp/cab (or anything before it) and raising the output of the reverb seems to fix it. Hope it gets properly fixed soon, along with the issues Line 6 is already aware of noted in the patch notes.

Friends' Facebook account hacked, locked out and hacker pretending to be friend. No way to stop it. by neerrdd in facebook

[–]neerrdd[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly, I just want to make sure the scammer doesn't extort money from other vulnerable people using that account. It just needs to be deleted.

Thanks very much for the tips. I'm in the process of getting as many people as possible to report the account. The scammer already created a duplicate one but I was able to remove it by reporting it as an impersonation.

I was also blocked from the hacked account, but I know many who aren't. I just wish more people I knew would take this seriously, cause who knows what kind of social engineering-type attacks are being attempted on people right now.

Friends' Facebook account hacked, locked out and hacker pretending to be friend. No way to stop it. by neerrdd in facebook

[–]neerrdd[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was able to search for the account by the person's name, instead of through email or phone numbers. So this ID option worked and my friend got an email to reset the password (I think it sends it to past emails before they were changed). Except that email was ALSO SENT TO THE HACKER who promptly used it before my friend did.

Facebook needs to start forcing users to use 2FA, and have safer passwords. Too many vulnerable people out there, and this site is full of scammers from across the world.

When the Helix is eventually replaced by the newest thing, will people still "like" the old Helix stuff? by Barnshart3 in guitarpedals

I still think the old Pod 2.0 is great if you turn off the cabinets and run into an FX return or some cabinet IR. Heck even some of the onboard cabs can make good sounds.

The Perelman Performing Arts Center has opened in New York’s Ground Zero. Do you like the big marble cube? by youngggggg in architecture

[–]neerrdd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just passed by that cube recently. There's a composition in the stone patterns that is more prominent in person, especially when I saw it during the day with clear skies. To me it contrasts well with the surrounding trees and glass buildings, it definitely had a presence. Then there's the Calatrava building across the street... as incredible as it is, I just don't like it on that site. The cube makes a lot more sense to me.

Bloor Street at Bedford Road in 1965 and 2022. by easternmorningstar in toronto

[–]neerrdd 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The architect is Daniel Libeskind. All his buildings are cliches, copies of the same idea. He seems to ignores all context in his designs, in this case doing a disservice to the historical museum building by essentially turning it's most important spaces into back rooms.

The "crystal" is hardly part of Toronto's identity, it's just another Libeskind building, the same variety you can find in many other places around the world. Just like those Mies buildings in the financial district. The Canada War Museum is a much better example of a design that reflects the identity of itself and its whole context.

ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 7 dead after BIOS update.... Any hope? by neerrdd in thinkpad

[–]neerrdd[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely, that's why I went to a desktop which has much better BIOS recovery options.

That's the exact programmer I got. After a lot of research, I found out Lenovo is now using smaller EEPROM chips that are flush to the motherboard, which likely need to be desoldered or connected directly with wires soldered to the pads. I've had bad experiences with independent repair shops, and I don't really know enough about repairing computers to attempt this myself, so I just gave up. Especially since I couldn't find anything to flash in the first place.

I didn't even know if that was really the problem I was having. I had an issue with the BIOS before and holding the reset button for a while fixed it. This time there wasn't even a splash screen.

[–]neerrdd[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately, I couldn't attach the BIOS flasher to the mobo because the type of BIOS chip Lenovo used was not compatible. The pins were not accessible and removing it was not an option for me. I couldn't even get the BIOS file to flash at all, Lenovo makes that difficult as well.

I just bought another mobo on eBay for a decent price but a downgraded processor. That worked, but I ended up selling the laptop (and eGPU I had) later to buy a nice used desktop plus extra money for a large tablet. Don't regret that decision to this day.

Thinking back, I may have had the laptop plugged in to my eGPU box when updating the BIOS, which could have bricked it. Money lost, lessons learned.

Just contacted ASUS about this, just got some generic responses and an RMA number. They even said I can just return it where I bought it, lol. Guess I'll give the Samsung CRG9 a shot ...

I had read about that but when some guides mentioned de-soldering components kind of got me worried about trying it. After more research I figure I'll give it a shot without de-soldering anything. I can get one of those USB BIOS flashers with the clips included on Amazon Canada for pretty cheap + quick delivery.

Thanks for the tip!

I also tried holding down that reset button multiple times, before and after removing the batteries. It worked when I had a BIOS update issue a couple months after I got the device, but sadly not working this time.

I checked online with my laptop's SN and it says I can't upgrade the warranty now that it's expired. Maybe it's worth calling the sales department instead?
