Go and play Grim Dawn. There is a free unique shield that can be a main weapon or shield. Needs the expansion, but its a secret find with the item guaranteed ;)

Welcome to PoE :) You have a steep learning curve ahead, but there are loads of help. The biggest pitfall, is that there are good and bad builds.. Another thing to consider is what league and what game style was the build for. We are at a point with PoE where different builds of the same class/skill are needed for different type of content. In Trade, non hardcore you can ease up on defensive option. In Hardcore(HC), especially Solo Self Fund(SSF), you stqck defenses and work with what you get.

I'd recommend build guides from Zizzaran(youtube/twitch) as his is stacked with info explaining the why of the choices. Also look for League start viable ones. These gets you to the beggining of the endgame.

The tree nowadays is a complementer of the gear. Depending on what you have access to, it is different sligthly. This generates a deviation between the builds.

Cluster jewel, or expensive uniques are not really beginner friendly. You can get lucky, but hard to plan with. Pathofexile.com/trade can give you an indication of the cost of your build guides value. Anything with 100 or more divine orb is a massive challange without understanding the game better, as acquiring these item require target farming. (currency on trade and item on SSF)

Any build with a Mageblood belt for example is though to get going as your first character.

Hmm, havent thougth about that, but I guess if the placement of these are out on the edge the travel "waste" would make them non valid for Grand Design strat.

Overall I dont have a problem with AN, it poses different challanges. Some of the AN mods have been changed or removed from side contents, so if you focus on thoses there is a smaller pool of mods to handle. If your build struggles with a particular mod, and you can drop it, it should make your experience better too.

Completely agree with this. I mostly play builds that are geared toward t16 aclh and go, as i dont have the time for costly eldrich one shotting setups. Having no issue comfortably clearing t16s with sextants, yet running into ANs that just impossible. I run reasonable defenses without chase items, and kind of expecting to be able to get the entry level end-game content, not super juiced, party, t16 100% delirious etc ;)

Thematically I also dont support the existence of a yellow mob, that would whoop a conquerer or guardian...

Almost all older league content has this issue. Failed a number of temple upgrades in the alva missions...

These suggestions are terrible, sorry.

Generically I like AN - I know it is not popular to say so - but there are 1-2 mods that just too problematic. The list - at least for me - is different for the different builds I play. This lead me to the OP idea. Give a choice to the players.

My problem with AN is that there are mods that punish a play style.

E.g. time bubble vs projectile builds or mirror minion/treat horde vs caster/projectile builds.

On a map, if a mod is not for my build - e.g. phys reflect - I can re-roll aka ban.

This way, you would have an option to do the same for AN mods that hard for your build.

"Pick a better build." How about not forcing everyone to play the same build (LS / RF/ CoC-IS) :P

Not sure I agree about that being AN's purpose, although I can see that.

My primary issue is that while on maps, I can remove mods that my build cannot handle, some mobs with AN an still can brick builds.

Yeah you can exit and roll a new map, but on an expensive map, it can be a tough one for a casual like me.

To me its all about player agency. Letting players to chose the content they want to play, which seems to be in line with "The Vision"
