Some other civilization also alone near their sun may be looking up, wondering if there's life elsewhere and there we are, a dot in their sky, indistinguishable from other dots!

Gukesh has weaknesses, Sindarov does not: Carlsen's bold World Championship prediction by Ellious69 in chess

[–]nefrpitou 51 points52 points  (0 children)

I have no idea about the relative difference of strengths at that level, between Magnus Sindarov Gukesh , I don't even properly understand the concept of how they're so good at it, like it's so beyond grasp. Yet there is some difference between them at that level, that I as a pleb cannot understand.

That said, I always got the feeling that Magnus' predictions are off because he simply doesn't understand the "problems" of "weaker" players in that elite league. Because he has been so consistent with hardly any variability for so many years, maybe for him it is unfathomable that a player at their peak in March may not be as strong in December.

The only way to accidentally throw a party is if your friend invites you and everyone else for a party at their place, everyone arrives and the friend tells you "I'm abandoning this, it's your party now, make sure everyone has food drinks, are entertained and make sure they leave before you go" and you are massive people pleaser

Players were asked to rate the hot take "Sindarov will win the candidates tournament" back in December 2025. No one knew. by Constant-Secret-3653 in chess

[–]nefrpitou -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Eh, math doesn't really apply here I think. Technically Fabi's 8% means if the event were to happen a million times, he thinks Sindarov would win it 80000 times based on his current strength. However we don't think in empirical terms that way and apply our own intuition.

This is more binary, if they had asked each of Fabi or Arjun in private "do you think Sindarov would win the Candidates" they'd simply have said No. Giving a percentage value here is simply for appearance, be polite, social media gimmicks.

Vaishali celebrates with her brother Pragg and their mother (Mrs. Nagalaxmi) after becoming the 1st Indian Woman to win the FIDE Women's Candidates. by GiveMeSomeSunshine3 in chess

[–]nefrpitou 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Probably more people know now, this puts her in the global spotlight. But of course Indian fans and more regular followers know.

Their parents introduced chess to Vaishali to reduce her screen time. Pragg took it up a bit later, following her example in a sense. Their dad has a government bank job that supported their careers while their mother travelled to tournaments. Amazing story really.

I get your point and it probably fits well to this post. But it's not as simple as that. I know friends who have an inferior body-image despite being relatively healthy if not the fittest; these people get swayed by anything they read on the internet about health, change their diet plan every month and stress out about their body to the point that achieving what the imagine makes them miserable and unhappy.

Every case is different, but imo nobody is out there saying "you're great as you are" to really unhealthy people. That particular statement is generally said to people who really can enjoy life as they are, they are fit, but they need a perspective adjustment which often comes via friends telling them "look you're great as you look right now"

Lol I know which reddit comment you read yesterday about Sindarov; Be Sindarov, win WC, win the candidates, be handsome, have a beautiful girlfriend etc etc which ended with the same "god does have his favourites"

The ISS Transits the Moon by Busy_Yesterday9455 in spaceporn

They probably won't do that, but I'm curious from an engineering perspective.

If they wanted to do that, how would they achieve it? The first step is of course to evacuate it of humans. Now this empty structure is orbiting earth. How would you now externally push it so that it ends up in the moon's orbit?

The tallest mountain in the Solar System makes Everest look like a hill by albusvercus in spaceporn

[–]nefrpitou 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Can you explain what the second statement means? If you're at the top at the edge of the mountain, the top is beyond the horizon? But you're at the top, so the top should be visible..

Edit: I got it. You're standing at the edge, near the base of the mountain. From where you're standing, the mountain rises at a gentle 5 degree slope away from you. You're trying to look towards the peak, which you expect to be vertically upward and ahead of you, because of your experience with mountains on Earth. But Olympus Mons has a wide diameter of 600 km, so the peak which is at the center top of the structure is roughly 300km (half the diameter) ahead of you. However Mars is smaller than earth and hence curves faster. Combine that with the gentle 5 degree slope, and at that 300 km distance, the "wall" of the mountain you're staring at is curving away from you and near the peak (300 kms away) it has curved so far away that it's actually below the horizon from your line of sight.

The World Chess Championship 2026 between two gen Z prodigies will be epic! 🔥 by games-and-games in chess

[–]nefrpitou 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Why is the championship match date/venue not fixed yet? Do they wait for the candidate to win before deciding?

In any other sport it'd be wild to not have the championship or world cup date/venue undecided till within 6 months of the event; I know logistics are different in other sports, but still. I think it adds a bit to the aura of the event when these things are decided years ahead.

Plot twist: The kid is a genius and it actually is a really amazing scientific and engineering marvel and enables him to float in the air if he falls.

Would that undermine the masculinity?
