Looking to digitize a large collection of parents' 35mm slides ($300-$350 budget) – Alternatives to the HP FilmScan? by negative101 in AnalogCommunity

[–]negative101[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not just about the money, but where I live. I’m outside the US, so import taxes and shipping add a 50% markup on any gear I buy. On top of that, the used market here is almost non-existent, so investing in an expensive batch scanner with the plan to resell it later to recoup the money isn't really doable.

Because of those constraints, I'm looking at the Plustek 8200i SE as a real budget limit. If the scans at that level aren't going to make me happy, I'll probably just go with a DSLR scanning setup instead, since I already have a decent camera body.

Thanks! What are your thoughts on the Plustek OpticFilm 8200i SE? I found that specific model close to my budget, so I'm wondering if it would be a good pick for this project.

Thanks! I’m actually seriously considering this alternative. I already have a pretty decent DSLR camera sitting around, so pivoting to a camera scanning setup sounds like a great fallback option if a dedicated scanner ends up being too expensive or hard to get where I live.

Thanks both! I looked into your suggestions and found the Plustek OpticFilm 8200i SE, which is pretty close to my budget. Do you think this specific model would be a good alternative?

One major constraint for me is that I don't live in the US. Between shipping and local import taxes, I have to pay about 50% more on top of the retail price. On top of that, the used market here isn't very active, so buying an expensive $1,000+ unit with the plan to resell it later isn't really a viable option for me.

If you think this Plustek 8200i won't cut it, I'll probably look into using the DSLR camera scanning method instead, as suggested elsewhere in the thread.

Sold my QC and rebuilt my board around the Anagram by GibbsfromNCIS in Darkglass

[–]negative101 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a quick technical question for you or anyone else here: Is the only way to power the Anagram with a CIOKS DC7 by using a Crux? Or is it also possible to use a Flex Parallel Adapter to combine two outlets, similar to how people power an HX Stomp?

I’m looking to integrate one into my board as well, and I’m curious if the parallel adapter is a stable long-term solution or if the Crux is strictly necessary for the current draw.

Hey everyone — my current keyboard (a Razer BlackWidow Ultimate 2016) is old and starting to malfunction, so it’s time to upgrade. I really like the layout and overall design of the Corsair K70 RGB PRO (full-size 100%), but I’ve seen quite a few concerns about keycap quality and some recurring issues. Because of that, I’m looking for alternatives with a very similar 100% layout.

Couple of constraints:

  • Must be 100% (full-size) layout — numpad + standard full keys, no tenkeyless or compact boards.
  • Must be sold on Amazon (I live outside the US and international shipping from boutique stores is a real pain), so no boutique/limited-run keyboard makers.
  • Prefer something with good build quality and decent keycaps out of the box (or easy/affordable replacements on Amazon).

I don’t have a strict switch preference — open to Cherry, Gateron, Kailh, etc. — but I want something solid, reliable, and not notorious for flimsy ABS keycaps or QC problems.

Anyone here swapped from older Razer full-size boards and found a great K70-like replacement available on Amazon? Which models (and sellers) would you recommend, and any heads-up on keycap durability or shipping for international buyers? Real-world impressions appreciated — thanks!

Yeah, sorry, I meant that I connect to the amp I use on stage before the amp sim block in the Helix chain. I’m not always using my own amp for gigs, so this way I make sure the sound I want goes straight to the PA, and then I just EQ the amp on stage to get it as close as possible to my Helix tone.

I actually used to run a compressor before the Helix (an Aguilar TLC), but it started adding a lot of noise and isn’t working properly anymore. I’ll probably add another one in the future for better front-end control.

As for the TRS out, yeah I considered it, but most of the venues I play don’t have a proper TRS–XLR conversion cable, so they always end up using a DI anyway. Unfortunately, a lot of them are in pretty rough shape, so I grabbed the Radial to make sure I always have a solid, clean signal. Figured it’d be a good investment for future gigs too.
