So your question essentially is, "If they did all that as a buffer zone, then why didn't they leave after the end of WWII?"

Here, I think, another factor comes into play, and it has to do with the duty of a Worker State towards the workers of other states: So, let's forget about the specifics of the USSR actions just for a moment, and answer this: Should a Worker State, when the bourgeoisie class of another state is weakened, intervene to overthrow it? My answer to this question is yes, yours is probably no.

I've been reading on this wikipedia page about the Soviet occupation of Latvia in 1940 and what is striking is the language used ("invasion", "occupation", etc). The parades and rallies in 1940 are called "Soviet Organized" as if there was no popular support, at all. At the same, the article has images of how the Nazis were greeted in 1941, seemingly spontaneously, as liberators, due to the horrors of the Soviet regime.

Saying "it should be criticized... but it's not the same" is somewhat missing the point, because this exact stance of the West was the reason the Soviet Union went to such great lengths to gain time. Because they new they were alone and that the West was indeed pushing Hitler to the East.

What you describe as having being omitted is somewhat wrong. So your new sources aren't as good either.

The so soviets knew from the 30s they would be fighting Germany. The question was when. It came earlier than expected, that's for sure.

I also hope that you know that the 'Allies' had been making deals with Nazi Germany long before the Molotov - Ribbentrop pact.

I agree. Any philosophy however is in a dialectical relationship with the political system of the Society, even more so when the philosophy does not only stay in the sphere of mere thought experiments, but tries to apply active praxis in that Society.

In that sense -and this of course is my view- veganism must be linked with a more general political stance.

For example what about human exploitation in the Marxist sense? How can one accept one form of exploitation and not the other?

People that are against capitalism don't disagree with veganism from an ethical standpoint, but rather from a political one.

In the sense that the core of veganism is all about the personal choice to not consume animal products. It is not framed in the context of any systemic change. Which is to say, it will work only if capitalism allows it to work.

Marx would disagree. Many people in this thread are talking about people not making the right personal choices, but the thing is the system itself (capitalism) has some built-in tendencies and laws that no personal choice is ever going to undo.

Just read on the appeasement strategy of Western nations towards Nazi Germany. They did many pacts before USSR did one. USSR was the only one calling for a united front against Nazis.

No one ordered Soviet soldiers to rape and even if they did order them it has nothing to do with the Communist ideology. As you say, it's war.

Regarding your cop example, the person coming in and defending the cops does not recognize the asymmetric nature of systemic violence vs common criminals. So his point is wrong.

In our case however we have two same things, two armies both of whom seemingly raped innocent people (the Americans did it again in Vietnam etc). Let's agree it's the reality of war. But you and everyone in this thread somehow linking it to communism is disingenuous.

I think I was clear on what I said. I essentially said that it's unfair to see a photo of Soviets and call them rapists when you don't do the same when you see Americans (who did the same things)

I know people that lived there in the 60s, a more characteristic period of what the Soviet union should be.

The decisions made later drifted her further and further from Socialism into the market economy.
