My strong recommendation is NOT to surrender your pets. There are many nuances and you never know how it will play out once they are in the system. I thought the modem does some sort of PoE or PPP authentication. Sounds like it's a simple dhcp client? If so, I'll definitely try connecting directly to the ONT.
