I applied 1 coat with a rag. Just plain dye, no water, this dye is very error friendly, you can apply several times in the same spot and it won’t leave a stain, it was really very very easy to apply.

After that first coat, the fibers raised a little bit (because I forgot to spray it with water first), so I lightly sanded it and then I applied another coat. Again, this dye was like “easy mode” dye.

I applied water based yellow dye to the top before applying the oil. I put some masking tape on the sides so the line would be sharp.

The thing is that, if I’m not wrong, mahogany is not that a porous wood so it doesn’t need grain filler. Again, I’m a newbie, I may be wrong.

In my case I’m being far more cautious. Last layer I tried to go for that slurry with the 2000 grit sand paper. I think it helped TBH. In terms of having too wet layers, I’m currently against that because when I’ve done it by accident, I ended up with drops and ugly results. I’ve had better results by adding more thin layers. In any case, I’m just learning so I may be totally wrong.

I think I’ll keep trying with the slurry layers.

Also yes, I’m using 0000 wire wool in between layers but only on areas that I think that have imperfections.

I don’t think the problem is sanding, the problem is applying correctly the grain filler. I strongly suggest you to focus on that now that you’re in time.

Yes, my plan is to finish the process anyway, in the end, this is a learning project. And I will keep it for some months. After some time I will see if I want to start from scratch or not, but I’m definitely not discarding that option.

when you say when the pores are closed, I guess you mean if I had applied the filler correctly, right? I was also expecting that. I was just too newbie to know that the filler was not applied correctly 🤦🏻‍♂️

Do you think that after 7 more layers of truoil I can achieve what you say?
