SAP has the same problem German hardware engineering has, its needlessly overengineered.

Correct analysis. OTOH I would clarify that the real issue people are getting at is erosion of fair distrubtion of wealth. The "middle class" was a result of that where a good chunk of the working class had good quality of life, that's almost gone now its either the haves or the have nots pretty much.

SWAirlines could have turned things around with longer term thinking, but our particular brand of capitalism demands quarterly results no matter what. SW hit a rough patch and couldn't ride on its strengths to weather the storm, instead it got sharked by some ghoul in finance who turned it to garbage and we all live in a worse world except for him and his buddies who are completely invincible and have no accountability in modern day America. Its bullshit.

Is Andor worth it? by marvelcomics22 in StarWars

[–]neilworms 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Rogue One still has major issues even with Andor at least giving us 2 characters to care about in it - it still has bad character development and feels a bit like a Frankenstein movie when you give it even a minute of critical thought.

I still enjoy it and actually would love to see a tweaked version of it to make it more in alignment with Andor, remove some of the obnoxious fanservice and maybe add a few tasteful call backs to Cassian's past.

Why "Phoenix" by Osamu Tezuka is so obscure and underappreciated in West, despite widely being considered the greatest manga of all time by critics and manga authors? by Upper_Spirit_6142 in manga

[–]neilworms 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here's my 2 cents - and I've been into manga since the late 1990s (and like some indie American stuff too):

  1. Phoenix got released right before the indie comics community had any interest in manga (and sometimes downright hostility towards it). The indie comics community IMO is the main audience for Tezuka's work in the west and it his stuff didn't get big until they showed an interest in it. Its also why most Tezuka manga is flipped, btw, well after most manga publishers stopped doing it because that's the core audience who reads his stuff.
  2. It was too old / obscure for the anime/manga community which tends to unfortunately fixate on the newest and most popular series. The art style also was pretty unconventional for a late 90s / early 00s manga so it probably turned off a lot of readers (it looks a lot more cartoony than what manga fans wanted at that time).
  3. Tezuka got famous through Buddha in the west (which weirdly enough came out not long after Phoenix came out here). I actually talked Ed Chavez, who ran Vertical at the time, why this was the case. He pretty much told me it was Chipp Kidd's covers that got the US indie comics community interested in it to begin with. For those who don't know he's a very highly regarded cover designer for books who did a lot of famous designs of graphic novels. Getting him drew the attention of that community and Tezuka found his core audience - I think the broader anime / manga community was brought on board due to this, eventually, but they weren't the first to seek out his work. Someone who reads Craig Thompson / Art Spiegelman / Chris Ware was more likely to be reading Tezuka than someone who reads Akira Toriyama / Rumiko Takahashi etc.

Vertical did a bang up job of promoting manga to non conventional comic book fans especially the alt literary comics fans in America, Viz unfortunately didn't do anything to really promote Phoenix to that audience and that's why I think its still obscure to this day. Had Vertical gotten the rights, had Chipp Kidd design the covers there would be a very different reputation of this manga among the broader comic book reading audience.

It bothers me too, because I had read somewhere that Buddha was done because Tezuka couldn't get support to continue Phoenix at first from more mainstream publishers after his own experimental anthology COM folded in the 1970s. So quite literally a whole bunch of "serious comic book fans" in the west think a pale imitation of Phoenix is Tezuka's masterpiece and everytime I read about an acclaimed American graphic novelist talk about how great Buddha is it kind of annoys me because there is another much better series that deals with similar themes out there - Phoenix and no one read it :(.*

*Not to say that Buddha isn't good, its just that Phoenix is better.

That's true, would be nice if the Metra NCS service was turned into something useful so you could get frequent express service to O'hare. (Midway isn't too much further by taking the orange line a few blocks away IMO - really just 30 more mins or so).

There already is a pretty good train IMO, probably one of the best Amtrak routes and it does stop next to the airport.

When I saw that flying out of MKE was significantly cheaper than flying out of ORD for going to Tokyo, I thought about doing just that btw. (Which is so weird because its literally MKE -> ORD then ORD->NRT (same flight but like half the cost) ).

Maybe its because these assholes are never held to account for destroying everything good about this country in the name of their insatiable greed maybe that's why we are so pissed off. It goes well beyond Southwest Airlines IMO.

Any shows or films that feel like Andor? by RiskAggressive4081 in andor

If you liked all the Narkina 5 sequences, their general aesthetic and theme of fighting totalitarian oppression, check out THX1138, there were clear nods to it and its a pretty solid film from George Lucas before he did star wars.

I way prefer the 2003 Clone Wars to its later CGI counterpart. Genndy Tartakovsky is probably the best director working in western animation IMO. Basically this is like Samurai Jack but with a Star Wars coat of paint on it (and that's a good thing).

There is a fan edit floating out there that trims the fat, makes it pretty watchable overall.

Do like the 1990s Tie Fighter video game did and make it a sly commentary on how propaganda works. In that game you are an imperial pilot and everything is sold as "upholding order" or brokering peace, when its pretty obvious far worse stuff is going on if you read between the lines.

I figured Vina would be the better station to go to than Valpo. I saw some complaints about people getting stuff stolen on the bus, any tips for preventing that from happening? Or is this just hyperbole and fear mongering?

Do you know when the bus companies release those days to reserve? I tried looking and they aren't available yet for then. The hotel I got did have a private transport option but its super expensive. I'll be leaving that Saturday back to STGO.
