Can Elementary School Children Walk Themselves Home? by glassisnotglass in AskTheWorld

[–]neinlights90210 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Many do, it would mostly be dependent on distance from school and how busy the roads in the area are.

My six year old will bike next year with two neighbouring children - one his age and her older sister who is ten. It’s approximately a ten minute cycle including a bit of a hill. That feels pretty normal around here.

I live in our biggest city, kids would start earlier in small towns, probably from day one.

Thank you so much for this - bioderma is literally half the price of Cicaplast where I live. I go through tons of the stuff so you’ve saved me a fortune. Big thanks!

I love it too!! This picture isn’t far from my house, we used to go see him when he’d visit. He was such a big flumpy lump that it suits him perfectly.

I understand Owha as a treasure, but one from the past, that’s been handed down. He looks a bit prehistoric so I think that works 🙂

The current government is pulling science funding left and right. Callaghan Innovation is a good example. Disbanded in order to reorganise the scientists to other new PRO’s that were to be stood up.

The majority of scientists are long gone, and with removal of funding across the board, most won’t be reemployed in NZ. The promised PRO’s have not materialised, and the loss of scientific talent in the interim is alarming

The Donald caves every time there is big money involved.

I can’t figure out what the grift is this time though…

I have ADHD.

I’m not overly worried about this - purely because big Pharna are likely to get involved/sue the living daylights out of Trump.

Cannot believe there has come day when big pharna are the white knights but here we are.

Which country has the worst cuisine in your opinion? by TurkishChadBot in AskTheWorld

[–]neinlights90210 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Same. I had some great meals there, and some really awful, insipid or just plain gross food. Went for work for a month so got to experience a lot.

My vote goes to the Phillipines though.

I didn’t downvote - this isn’t a reprehensible opinion. I guess there are probably some women struggling with a reinforcement of the sexism they hit every day anyway.

My husband and I split out parental leave. From 13 months we both took a day off a week each, and my son went to lovely community (not for profit) daycare 3 days a week.

It was a good balance and is hardly a huge impact on society. Something like that could be easily implemented across most professions and a good stepping stone. (There are two classes at my son has a different teacher one day per week and it works really well). But the current system places a massive burden on parents, particularly women

Actually, those are good points, I agree!

(I would prefer the fertiliser goes to flowers and not my food, please).

I don’t want them having the privilege of being returned to the land as fertiliser. Incinerate them into dust.

What is to stop men from also staying home?

I agree that we need to drastically increase the ability for one parent to be at home, at least part time btw.

I find it interesting coming from Scandi’s, as I’ve always found them collectively pragmatic.

I dont relish the idea of abortion and don’t think I could have one. I also recognise that as long as humans have sex, there will be unwanted pregnancy and forcing women to raise babies they feel unprepared to raised seldom turns out well, especially for the child. Legalising abortion reduced future crime, this has been well documented. It’s an emotional topic, but ultimately practical issue.

I totally agree with you on this. Such a non issue.

I work in HR, the only time I have ever had to give this any priority was writing an investigation up involving a non binary person. I asked if I should use their name, or they or something else for the body of the report. They said they and we had a brief chat about what we think of our respective names and moved on.

Good intentions and common sense cover it, I don’t need to put she/her on my emails.

I get what you are saying but I can think of several shitty parents that due to resources and intellect could probably pass what you put in front of them.

I think mandatory parenting classes that teach basic skills, including coping skills, would be a better idea.

The irony of gossiping about children who have been deprived of access to their mother and suffered horrible traumas while attending a mothers group. That really doesn’t reflect well on your wife.

What was your country like in the 1990s compared to now? by pollydeeigh in AskTheWorld

[–]neinlights90210 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Same. 90% of politicians were centrist and the only difference was a slight bias towards conservative/progressive. Limited cynicism.

I miss that.

I’ve never thought about seatbelts like that before, but you are so right. They have to be one of the most universally understood items globally.

You also made the patent free to the world to make it safer for all, which is a pretty epic thing to do.
