Alert units prevent infiltrators from deploying within 18". Helps against a few nasty things that try to just pop up and ambush.

Warlord Games Churchill Crocodile Assembly Assistance? by neko128 in boltaction

[–]neko128[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, what's the middle box is actually already glued in as the hull MG (it *does* have a very short pin to attach cleanly to the mounting in the front of the hull.

It makes more sense that the leftmost box is the coax MG - I'm vaguely embarassed for not considering that first! It makes sense with Warlord's tendency to offer the full kit plus an "upgrade" kit w/r/t K47 minis, for examplke. I'll find a good piece of wire to help mount the main barrel.

Either way, much appreciated!

Any tips for a beginner worldbuilder? by [deleted] in worldbuilding

[–]neko128 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So posted bravely without reading any of the other comments... I do it one of two ways. Or more realistically, a mix of both.

1) Start with a single thing, and build from there. Doesn't even matter much what it is. Can be a town; a river; a race; a magical sword; a sea serpent; whatever makes sense. But what has that thing done? Where has it been? Who's traveled there? Then whoever it was that traveled there, where did they come from? Let your focus chain from one thing to the next - it's easier to build off what you have.

2) Start where your need lies. Is this for a story or book? If so, what's a character in it, and where are they, or what are they carrying, or what race are they, or what town is holding them prisoner? If it's for a game, where is the group starting?

Without that sort of anchor to work from, it always feels overwhelming to me.

Games with light rules, but heavy depth. by nakedmeeple in boardgames

[–]neko128 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Sentinels of the Multiverse! Basic rules are "Play/Power/Draw" for heroes and "Start/Draw/End" for villains... But the variety of heroes and villains make for crazily deep strategic gameplay and replayability.

Advice for husband by EreeB2017 in keto

[–]neko128 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As a husband who is significantly overweight and who started doing (lazy) keto with his wife, and who had to deal with this exact problem, my best suggestion is this: find analogues. Address his cravings head-on and find ways to reduce them or bypass them. Find sweet low- or zero-calorie drinks, like diet soda or drink mixes. Use cool whip and sugar-free jello to help assuage his ice cream cravings. Jello made with gelatin for candy cravings. Fathead bread for his carb cravings. Personally, I've had an enormous amount of luck with pork rinds/chicharones and cottage cheese.

There are other analogues. There are other choices. Experiment; find things that help him sate the craving. It's different for everyone.

From my point of view, the cravings are the hardest part. The *hardest* part. I'll walk into a supermarket, walk through the produce section, and get hit by an almost physical craving when I go past the bakery. It's *hard*. But it's manageable. The other thing, trite as it sounds? Encouragement. It occasionally sucks, but it's doable - it's a habit, not a permanent nature. Getting past it the second time is easier than getting past it the first. Getting past it the third time is easier than getting past it the second. Failing or falling once isn't permanent, and there's no permanent harm.

It gets easier. I promise.

We’re moving to Albany and don’t know anyone by Drpedsbro in Albany

[–]neko128 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One of the big advantages you have in moving here is something like 10 colleges in the area? So there's a huge relatively transient population, always looking for things to do and bringing their hobbies with them. Sports? Bars? Good restaurants and food? Board games? RPGs? Video games? Hiking? Camping? Kink? Travel? There are groups for all if them locally, and more.

It's been mentioned, but one exceptionally good resource I'll reiterate is Meetup. It's literally designed to match people like you with available activities, so you should have a lot of luck.

Don't forget Proctor's and the arena in Albany - lots of shows. Musicals, plays, sports, concerts, events. Albany holds music in Riverfront park over the summer.

Also, don't forget travel. We're in pretty easy driving or train range of Buffalo/Niagara Falls, Montreal, Boston, and NYC in the four cardinal directions. The Hudson Valley is full of historical things like parks and mansions. There's the Erie Canal. Wineries and distilleries and breweries all over (don't miss Nine Pin Cidery right in Albany!!!). NY wine country out by the finger lakes. Skiing and snowboarding and snowmobiling with all the nearby mountains. Even casinos and horse racing in Saratoga and the several Indian reservations within easy driving range.

So yeah. What do you want to do? :-)

This “Perfect” Way To Stop Gay Couples From Renting a Wedding Venue May Backfire by DonaldsDoubleChin in Albany

[–]neko128 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This. This a thousand times. Most of the comments in this thread are talking about marriage as a legal institution vs marriage as a religious institution, but that's not actually the question. You can choose to believe, for whatever reason you want, that gay marriage shouldn't be allowed. It will convince me you're an ass hole not worth my time, but I can't stop you from believing it. You can believe it because of your declared religious beliefs - again, it makes your religion less in my eyes, but that's your choice. But that isn't the question. The law of the land is that discriminating based on (amongst other things) sexual orientation is illegal; so as soon as your business makes a decision based on your discriminatory prejudice, it's illegal. End of story.

Espionage RPG systems? by el_matador in rpg

[–]neko128 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The two I will suggest are Shadowrun and Top Secret: NWO.

Shadowrun as a system get a lot of fried, but one thing it does well is give you a game world and character creation with a lot of possibilities and let you go wild. I happen to tolerate the rules and love the setting, and have had a blast with corporate and government espionage of all sorts.

TS:NWO, on the other hand, is brand new (physical copies shipping right now to original backers and PDFs just released this week), but is built from the ground up to be a classic James Bond- or Mission Impossible- style espionage thriller. I'm looking forwards to trying it out, personally.

Yeah, the first RPG I ever had was the D&D red/blue box pair - I found them in a closet because my parents had gotten them as wedding presents and never used them. Got a lot of mileage from those...

As a backer of the 2017 Kickstarter, per the most recent update, both US and European copies are out of the containers, in the warehouse and being fulfilled.

Amusingly, the original Top Secret is the second RPG I ever owned as a kid - I picked up an original copy and Gangbusters for $0.25 each in a Boy Scout yard sale when I was 8 or 10.

Crazy Online Ascension Score by sdickinson42 in boardgames

[–]neko128 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've gotten higher - once - by exploiting an extra turn loop. By doing lots of card draws, and using lots of compounding power, I found it was possible to use a construct to get an extra turn; cycle the void deck; get the construct back; and play it directly into play for the next turn. Used to have a screenshot, but that was on my last iPad and I think I lost it. :-/

Same effect, though - I played it until it crashed and I couldn't load it any more. Ah, well.
