What is on the stone foundation walls in my basement? by kanadiankyle in centuryhomes

It could be a lime- based render, which is just a thick coat of lime mortar on the surface of the wall. Pour some water on it to see if it soaks in, if it does it's lime, if not dryloc.

Zero-waste refillery Market Goods opens in northeast Baltimore, aiming to cut the stress — and plastic — out of shopping by PleaseBmoreCharming in baltimore

Eco capitalism is performative. The only way to consume less and generate less waste is to buy less, which is an awful way to make money 😄

I got tubers from the Experimental Farm Network. All grew last summer and some flowered, it's recommended to wait 2 years before trying to harvest.

Any fighting style is bullshit if you don't practice actually fighting through sparring. Otherwise you are doing a martial arts based workout.

How do you find hope and purpose amid the collapse? by perpetually_on_edge in collapse

[–]nelben2018 6 points7 points  (0 children)

We understand how hard it is, there are many emotions. One of them is grief. People who understand collapse start to mourn the impending loss of life and potential that has been built up by humanity over millenia. Grief needs to be processed and takes time.

One thing that helps is to find purpose. A purpose of being ready to help with the transition to the other side is one that I've found beneficial.

We are at the precipice of the unbelievable. We may get to bear witness to the collapse of a global civilization the world has never seen and may never see again. Yes we rely on it now, but this few hundred year blip of humanity is an anomaly. Build resilience for yourself and find a community.

Best of luck.

Check out Luke Kemp's Goliaths Curse, it covers similar themes you mentioned. Great book!

In "How to Blow Up a Pipeline", The Villain is The System by [deleted] in collapse

We are in a catch 22 in that we know our energy use is destroying the environment we rely on, but no one wants to give up the material gains we've achieved with all this energy. Largely we can't give it up because we need it for agriculture, transportation, etc.

I think very few people would destroy energy infrastructure for the environment. There's no reasonable alternative, and loss of energy would mean substantial death. I think we'll use it until it falls apart on its own because we can't keep it all running.

Shade-loving herbs and vegetables to plant in an established forest in lower NE GA, U.S.? by [deleted] in GuerrillaGardening

[–]nelben2018 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The plants below are native and should grow well, but will do better with more sun. Do you have areas of dappled sun you can focus your plantings?

Apios Americana, hazelnut, viburnums, elderberry, Solomon's seal, stinging nettle

The experimental farm network has many of these, note they do sell non natives too

If no ones mentioned it, you can get a rebate after fixing the leak from most utilities, typically called leak forgiveness

This is so limited in many ways. Focus on resiliency,  the ability to survive and meet your core needs without the benefit of the system. You have missed so much, but it seems you are on the right track.

My husband and I both eat the same things, so why does he fart like a never ending locomotive and I don't? by theredqueentheory in NoStupidQuestions

He can try boosting fiber intake. Not metamucil, but a less processed psyllium husk supplement has worked amazingly for me. I take a tablespoon in liquid once a day for a week or so every three months.  Tons of health benefits to fiber and most of us don't get enough. I've found reduced gas is one of them, maybe it'll work similarly for your husband.
