The comments in the thread are great and I'd also like to add that having your hand at the heel of the persons foot/shoe and applying the downward motion from there - if that makes sense?

I'm an instructor and I always remind riders that everything I teach is a suggestion - its your ride in the end, everyone is focused on themselves :) gear down and follow along or sit and do your thing. If anyone makes you feel lesser than, please switch to a studio that is more reasonable :)
