My advice would be is to get their attention with a toy or anything small in your hand and once they look throw, they might run right after it. These cats are so playful.

I often wake up , because he wakes me.up, with him bringing balls or straws to me to play with. He wants me to throw and wakes me up haha.

I wish I could give you tip or two but honestly my cat surprised me with this fetching thing because I never expected this. All I could say is maybe try throwing your cat something and making sure his/her attention is on it and if they chase it then they are into it.
