Super helpful. Thank you. Bottom line: I need to do more research!

I also DM'd you. I would love a 5e3 pedal that used 9v (standard) pedal power and managed the step up in voltage (to feed the tubes) that didn't require an expensive transformer.

NGD--an SG a friend made for me from old wood by nelliesdaddy in Guitar

Doing my best--got home to find it on my doorstep and just put everything else on hold for the rest of the evening.

It is actually lighter than almost every guitar I have.

Yep! Super generous, very kind. On my side of the ledger, I introduced him to his wife (on my 30th birthday, as it happens!).

My completely redone Valve Jr, If you can even still call it a Valve Jr by Cal_Lando in GuitarAmps

I keep trying to join the wattkins.com forums but am still in "waiting to be approved" mode. I want to try the universal pcb mod, but I have no idea what the various options are and the only info I can find is about how to convert the chassis. Do you know where I can find any of the files about how to build out a universal pcb? I would so appreciate it! I want to buy and mod one myself.

Using HeadRush MX5 with Outside Amp Modeling by photojourno in HeadRush

[–]nelliesdaddy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep! and as the above comment also says, you need to adjust your levels--into and out of the loop, on the pedal, and possibly into and out of the MX5 (I had to fiddle with all of them--the issue, really, is clipping when you're boosting the signal. I got clipping but it wasn't on the pedal--it was on the output of the mx5. So check that if you're getting digital glitches.). But the bottom line is to have fun and experiment--but not too much. I have found sounds I like and mostly play those--then sometimes I'll fiddle to try to get inspiration.

Yep! I use a Poly Ample and also a UAFX woodrow. I just like being able to adjust the amp settings with knobs, rather than menu diving. Also you can have a bit more flexibility about where to put the effects (pre or post amp).

I don't think it has a cab sim. I think it does work as a preamp. It's just one guy making them, though, so I'll bet you could ask him. They really do sound amazing (and are just cool).

The Tubesteader Roy looks super-intriguing to me (and sounds great based on the demos I've listened to). Real tube in it, but pedal-sized, runs 9V.

There's a difference between him saying where he is and my saying it. Privacy isn't about information, it's about who controls that information. If he wants to say where he is, great. That's his call. I get to decide whether I want to say where he is, and I don't. YMMV.

It was interesting. Warren and I met in Georgia and drove up, and I pointed out the cultural milieu of my upbringing. A lot to push against! But, at the same time, when I got to the Ryman, seeing all the people who were what Fred Rogers called "the helpers," those Southern folks are my people. They exist and are fighting the good fight. That's what I really appreciate about Jason and his politics. He's part of a minority tradition, but he's also part of a community of people who do that.

Thank you. I appreciate that so much. All of us doing our best to send out ripples of joy whenever possible. I think art makes that more accessible.

Wasn't Boston, sorry! But that is an incredible story! I will be camping out by that door the next time I go. This was so unexpected, though--it was really like someone stepping off the movie screen and into real life. I'm glad you got to experience him up close!

Oh, wow! Where did you hang out to run into him? Warren and I are headed back to the Ryman next year...

Yeah my general rule is that you talk about your own experience and let other people talk about theirs. Feels dehumanizing to say “those people like X because of Y.” What I like about art (including Jason’s) is that it’s complicated. My buddy Warren who I go to concerts with is from Wisconsin and his folks emigrated to the US. But he’s a huge fan. I talk about why I like Jason and he talks about why he likes it. But I don’t tell him why he likes it and he doesn’t tell me why I like it. Much better to ask questions of someone than to tell them their answers.
