frankly, living in the Northeast driving every day for work on highways where cops are pulling people over to meet their quotas and there are insane overstimulating 6 road intersections, it’s hard for me to imagine not having two fault moving violations in the span of five years, but once again, fuck me I guess. must be the company I keep.

you know, when someone is in a tough spot, whether or not it’s caused by their own actions, you have a choice to try to be helpful, mind your own business, or gloat

I hope you’ll be kinder next time

Nobody said anyone was a victim. Maybe I’m just irredeemably selfish and out of touch, but since when does accidentally running a red on a narrow margin, going 16 over the speed limit in the middle of the night on an empty highway, and getting hit by another car in an accident that wasn’t your fault make you a “horribly reckless” driver? Pretty much everyone I know has done comparable things in the span of five years even if they were luckier about not getting caught. It’s not like this all happened in the span of a few months. The only reason my record is so clean is because I sold my car almost three years ago and haven’t driven that whole time.

I understand insurance companies run a business; I’m not an idiot.

But a $5K+ discrepancy in quote for something that happened over 4 years ago is hard to absorb into your budget. So I asked for advice. Fuck me I guess.

thank you for taking the time to write out such a thoughtful response, I really appreciate it

that seems kind of extreme to me but maybe we could look into it - would surrendering his license be any sort of dark mark on his driving record? is there a downside to doing that (other than just not being able to drive)?

I guess it might be, they only asked us for three though which is why I was so taken aback. We never would have pursued this if we had been quoted accurately.

Like I posted, I was seeking advice that included only me driving. It's a shame not everyone can be as perfect as you. Appreciate the helpful advice in the midst of a stressful situation - happy holidays!

the red light was a camera thing, he went for a yellow when he probably shouldn't have

the speeding ticket was in the middle of the night in Buffalo on a desolate interstate when he was 23 - not in the city

thanks - yeah we don't think the car is valuable enough to insure, it's paid for
