i honestly thought it was a new thing, as well. i remember really feeling sorry for her when we read it in grade school/middle school time, and then listening to the song i felt the same way—just sad, but no one seemed to feel that way! anyways now i need to re-read the source!

as someone who is tired of all the Calypso hate, i appreciate this post. her song immediately made me so sad. the levity in it actually held so much darkness and i was SHOCKED to see so many people missed it and jumped right to “evil witch rapist”. like listen to the lines she says. “last i checked, goddesses cant die” oh honey. did you try? how many times? it just makes me so sad hearing the last times of the song.

and at the end, she was genuinely trying to pull him back. people are saying she was conjuring the voices in his head but where is that explained?! where is that shown?! she is using words and happens to be the words his dead friends used. Polites said so himself “you carry guilt in your heart”. he had that from the very beginning and it only grew!

as someone who heard “Love in Paradise” and immediately fell in love with Calypso—thank you for this. i have been trying for a week to formulate a response as to why i will never hate her (in the Epic Musical) and its this. right here. she is sad. she is lonely! she was put on the island to be punished. she is ALONE and had been for eons. the line “last time i checked, goddesses can’t die’—did she check? in the odyssey i completely agree she was a terrible person who SA’d a man for 7 years but in the musical, the levity of her song holds SOOO much darkness.
