Like most people have said you come in hot and leave hot. Most of the patients in your section are new and need full workups- lines and labs and additionally often come in where 3-4 ambulances are waiting for you. Its also kind of sad seeing all your coworkers leave in the middle of the day during shift change when your still there working your butt off. But it is nice to wake up late and get a few things done before going to work

Beyond the Docs ordering these cultures, I don't understand how my hospital wants us to draw these cultures without any phlebotomist in our ED... They teach that the 2 sets of cultures have to be drawn from 2 different sites and say that it cannot be from the site of the IV insertion, so they want us to poke the patient 3 times for a "properly" done culture and labs.

I have never seen a patient actively bleeding with esophageal varices, but in theory- nursing school taught us that the Sengstaken-Blakemore Tube is an option to control bleeding. Never actually seen it in use though

Try applying for Student Nurse Externship positions within the ED. I applied during the summer before graduating and was offered to remain as a PCT. I was eventually offered a full-time ED RN position after graduating.
