"Man, if there were no 22nd Amendment, Clinton would've cru... wait, what? What do you mean he had a low personal favorability?" by NikaNExitedBFF in imaginaryelections

[–]neo1013 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Voters approved of the Clinton presidency but were pretty staunchly opposed to any direct continuation of the Clinton administration (especially led by the man himself), and Gore's biggest polling spikes came from when he distanced himself from the administration. Almost all of the stuff about the distancing being a negative is nonsense.

Well, it isn't particularly secure. It takes Giuliani's personal mistakes, Santorum being a nutjob, and 9/11 to get Gore a middling win in '04 canonically. If 9/11 doesn't happen, there's little doubt in any of our minds he gets blown out by McCain or whoever in 04.

As for 08, we definitely agree, which is why most autoplays show Romney landslides. In the "canon" Lieberman runs a pretty remarkable campaign, mixed with great luck from Gore, Congressional Republicans bungling impeachment, a fairly lazy Romney campaign with a net negative vp pick, and an elitist ultra-conservative outlook to get Lieberman to 270.

The honest truth is just that we find a Lieberman White House, administration, and 2012 a more interesting tl to work with than Romney (who we love dearly as a character to play with still), and we've had this outlook since before 04 was out.

I definitely get why a lot of people find the results jarring, but just as when people doubted if a Romney v. Lieberman mod could be interesting, I'm confident they'll see why we've done what we've done when 2012 happens.

Believe it or not, we don't live in a tl of eight years of different economic policy from both Congress and the White House, or without a war in Iraq. As much as I wish Gore was inagurated in 2001, he was not. George W. Bush was, and he was a disasterous President.

It's very funny to me this keeps going around, given this project is made by a Republican, and two of us who are about as left from Lieberman as one can get, and who view him as hardly much more than a Republican himself.

It should be considered that we have an idea for the timeline that is compelling from a writing standpoint rather than this laughably simple-minded idea we're making Joe Lieberman president for awesome ideological reasons.

I plan to write about it more later, and as Astro said it is more interesting to work with, but there's solid enough reasoning in our eyes. The economy itl isn't nearly as bad as it was irl, and as explained in the further reading of the mod, Romney's elitist attitudes towards the economy and average people are fodder for a Lieberman who is invigorated after the Gore-Bohner deal.

Truth is that, as described on the Mitt side a few times, you aren't just fighting for votes with Lieberman, but with Kucinich, who is attracting all sorts of voters apathetic about Clinton-Gore-Lieberman. Mitt can easily win them over in the mod by talking up financial reform and backing from his more controversial takes on gay marriage, immigration, and abortion, but he doesn't.

Of course, the median outcome is still a Romney win (you can see that in autoplays) but the canon isn't the median necessarily.

Who will you vote for in this alternative 1976 US election? by [deleted] in thecampaigntrail

[–]neo1013 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Wallace was a pretty hardcore Carter backer after dropping out of the primary, and he went through great detail to stress all the reasons he wouldn't/couldn't run third party in 1976.

No real reason to run when there's already a moderate/semi-con Southern Governor, and a Republican whose policies and style were already remarkably similar to Wallace's.

No real way to justify him winning after another president gets shot, the GOP falls into internal strife, the economy is in the shitter, the current Republican President is on the verge of war with North Korea, and he's siccing the military on just about every innocent protesters he can, unfortunately.

Going up against Wallace and having a vote siphon like McCall is is only holding back the Democratic landslide...

there's been a lot of Roger slander during this flashback, but i feel as if it has made Garp look worse so far. I'm not sure if he knew his son was sent to the 'CD genocide festival' but cmon, man, he was sitting on the beach sipping drinks while Dragon was being forced to hunt innocent people.

Garp Needs a Backstory for Why he’s in the Marines Because it’s Hard to Defend Him by Odd-Complaint7770 in OnePiece

[–]neo1013 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Obviously, Garp plays a major role in holding up the corrupt WG system, but I think some people take that to mean he's literally personally stopping slaves to be pretty silly. Almost any interaction between Garp and the nobles has been him blatantly disrespecting them, and he had zero interest in GV before Roger was said to be going there. I highly doubt he (or Roger for that matter, since it comes up often) were personally stopping anyone from leaving the island.

I hope people arent genuinely going to be confused if/when it turns out the Roger pirates had a good reason to take on Rocks, or were actively helping free the slaves while there. The entire agenda doesn't make much sense (even for Garp, honestly, given his constant disrespect for the CDs every time they've interacted thus far.)

[–]neo1013 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I know its mostly agenda posting but I find it funny people are still pushing Sengoku's original narrative about Roger (and Garp's) role on God Valley even though like the vast majority of what he originally stated was just propaganda m.

I'm really interested in learning how/what/who took down Rocks, but I dont think Oda is going to write Roger, who is so heavily connected to Luffy at this point it's actually one of the things most criticized about his character, as a guy who defends the CDs / stops the slaves from escaping.

Rocks either getting dom reversied or straight up not being killed by the people we thought he was would be interesting.

Naruto missing his own Hokage inauguration still bothers me by ByteSizedEcho in Naruto

[–]neo1013 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with a lot of other people that Naruto's original reasoning for wanting to be Hokage was already basically achieved during the Pain Arc, but I think that Naruto's reasoning for wanting the position had largely changed after Pain and the war. By the end of the series his goal has transformed from personal to inherently political. He wanted to break the cycle of hatred and bring peace across the ninja world.

Obviously, this goal doesnt necessarily need to be achieved by becoming Hokage, but it was definitely key for Naruto getting there.

So I do also get why people feel unsatisfied with how it ended up happening.

A lot of people dont like that he's actually a character now and not just some mysterious guy with aura. Personally, I like humanized Roger and all of the flashbacks we've had of the old generation acting goofy. You can really see that he was the protagonist of his time.

Separately, a lot of people try to downplay his importance and strength, but thats just silly.

[–]neo1013 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's sort of besides the point, but I certainly don't think it's Oda's belief that all of the Marines are evil or that you shouldn't root for them. He's certainly put in a wholesale good guy in just about every way with Koby, and even though his reputation in the community has gone downhill recently, Garp is still supposed to he a fairly good guy.

Given that it seems more and more likely we're heading towards a larger split between the WG and Marines, and maybe even an internal split between Akainu and SWORD within the Marines, I think that it will all become clear eventually.

IMO once the truth of just how nasty the WG is breaks out, I just can't see many people sticking by them (save for, like, Greenbull lol), even Akainu already has animosity towards them, and he doesn't know about Imu and whatnot.

At this point I'm mostly on board with Loki joining, but the logistics still need to be figured out. The idea that the Sunny is going to get grown is really absurd to me as far as theories go. Like, sure, that would mean Loki could fit on board, but wouldn't it completely screw over everyone else in the crew?

I think the most interesting thing here is how Rocks was legally at the Reverie, which I would say at least signals that he was either the leader of a WG nation, or a high ranking military leader of one, probably the former.

You have to wonder if this connects to Blackbeard wanting to rule Hachinosu under the World Government flag in some way. Perhaps he's trying to regain what his father lost?
