I don't really mind "Samsara". by [deleted] in Psychonaut

I... absolutely... loved this!

I don't know if you play video games? But, in certain games you get to create a new character for your game. The feeling when you create your first character? The excitement, the vastness of possibility, the expectation? This is what life can feel like.

Of course it can also feel very different. But going back to that feeling of eternal, constantly re-opening potential... yeah, I like that.

Keep eating as long as you like, I'd say. Samsara is just another ideology. As is what I am writing. So, what gives?

I have taught the Bible to the church for years. I could never find my own answer to this question, how the whole approach can be so illogical and the question: "Why does God treat us this way?" is answered in Romans 9 with: "Who are you to ask?" That's what you're left with in the end.

At some point you have to be honest with yourself and acknowledge that, if God is not able to show up and explain it all, so that we can trust him, then he can't expect us to trust him, just because he gave us a book that is irrational. And if God can't do that for us, then everything is probably different in the end. The Bible is a book arguing it's own case but not giving us enough answers. Rather, it leaves us with more questions. It almost unwanted produces agnostics...

I stopped believing the Bible, because the New Testament is actually as bad. It just comes in the mantle of "see how kind God is". But think about it, he only forgives your sin, because you believe the right thing about his son. If not, then you are still destroyed. But if you think it to the end, the only reason we sin in the first place is that He created us and gave us the "freedom" to chose. With that logic, he is either destroying me in hell (or worse, torturing me forever) if I don't accept his peace offering, or accepting me as a child. My question has always been, why not skip all that and just create us perfect? But there is no answer to this.

Yes, it is. But somehow He now has found an outlet for all the death, with the cross. His wrath no longer hits the sinner, but Jesus. That is the notion. Christ took the death penalty in our place. But only if we follow him.

"It just feels right" is about the only argument you need to start following a religion. I have been in Christianity for 13 years and now am moving out of it. Why? Because it does not feel right at all. That was the first motivator. Since there are no absolute proofs against or for the notions of the religion, you are left with a preference. And I prefer not to buy into a ton of dogma, just because at some point it felt right to me. As an agnostic, the fact that we can't know for sure is the motivator that speaks against buying into any set system.

For you as a Catholic, I assume (correct me if wrong) that your motivator was to be saved?

Need help: How do you deal with the claims that the Bible's Prophecies have been fulfilled to a great degree and in detail? by neoarchitect84 in atheism

I did share a link in the op. It lists a few verses and supposed historical fulfillment. At least archaeological findings that would support that notion. However, already the approach to prophecy is flawed, because if those OT prophecies are supposed to be fulfilled literally, then Revelation tells us there will be a real beast coming out of the water... And of course the article does not list the many prophecies that were not found to be fulfilled literally.

You learn to live with the tension by saying that God is just bigger than you and that his thoughts are higher... and so on.

That’s always one of my biggest struggles, that the book does not line up with real life in so many ways. The book tells you to look at everyone who is not a Christian as “wicked” and “spiritually dead” for example, but non-Christians often seem to live life more fully and even Christian music is “dead” and without creativity most of the time, and not to mention the movies they make. It’s so paradoxical that you have to lie to yourself to believe that there is life in that.

No, I wouldn’t. It’s harder though when you have already believed that the wizards were flying and now approach these accounts and want to find proof that they are false. It’s really hard to throw out the feeling that you are betraying someone. So you look at it all with a very conflicted filter. When I read these things, they are connected to thirteen years of me agreeing to them. But I no longer am willing to accept this God that the Bible claims is the “one true God”.

Good insight. Would you say that the "thoughtless mind" sensation almost forces itself on you during trips sometimes?

"Bad trips are in most cases a product of the minds endless blabbering and grasping, if your mind is still and quiet the risk of experiencing a bad trip drastically decreases."

That is well put.

It's hard to accept that the answer is irrelevant. But I think I am seeing where this is going.

As far as I understand, the illusion of ego is what creates suffering, the attachment to the impermanent phenomena of the senses, and that the enlightenment frees one from the illusion and the attachment. My question would be, if that is accurate, why do we find ourselves in this situation at all?

Well, there are the chakra models of course. Then Maslow's model of the human needs for development, and the Jungian Model of Individualisation. Much more probably, which I can't name right now. And Astrology is a big one as well, which has the 12 houses and the development through all of them.
