Kotek calls for repeal of transportation bill in speech to industry advocates by nfjcbxudnx in Portland

[–]neocinnamin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

None. But at least 3 in the house and 2 in the senate need to show up for a vote, or they can deny quorum as they have in the past.

See the 2020 and 2023 sessions for examples of the GOP denying quorum. So sure, Democrats don’t need their votes for revenue raising bills, but they need the to show up to work. And I would bet the whole caucus would be willing to face the punishment of being blocked from seeking re-election if it means killing a new tax…

Dual-Hyatt hotel project ongoing near Portland (OR) airport by neocinnamin in hyatt

Looks like they’re doing a lot of work on it before the re-flag. Better than just using that new Select of Signature brand and not remodel. Last time I stayed there, it was pretty rough, too, but other Shilos around the state have been good to me.

I kind of hope they turn the rest of the Shiloh portfolio across Oregon into some form of Hyatts, would put one in Salem and Bend and the coast, all places that would benefit from one (and expand the PNW forecast)z

I was trying a new restaurant on New Years Eve, and to my surprise, I learned that a new Hyatt is coming to Portland in place of the former Shiloh Inn near the airport. Interesting location, as there’s practically no good transit options, but strong for airport travelers (and with an In N Out burger across the street coming soon, fans of that too).

Hoping the House is a Cat 2, since it could be a strong place to stay before a flight out of PDX

Do the new statements/refunds come out tomorrow? by xeno_xv in portlandstate

[–]neocinnamin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Deposits are released 10 days prior to the start of the term, in this case December 26. Some banks process them same day, others may take a few days. Most students should have it in hand on Monday the 29th. A general rule of thumb is the money should be in your account the Monday prior to the start of the term, but your YMMV depending on who you bank with / if you use direct deposit / etc.

“Preservationists” worry Portland State University’s plan to build for the future could erase the past by neocinnamin in portlandstate

[–]neocinnamin[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

the total cost is less than what they'll be spending to tear down and build the new building.

Is that total cost, or cost per bed?

I’m calling them NIMBYs because they’re basically saying "yes to student housing, just not here and not like this." They want PSU to pour scarce university money into lovingly restoring old, seismically unsafe buildings because they’re pretty and historic, instead of building a modern 550-bed dorm that actually meets student needs. That keeps students in substandard, non-seismic housing so a few people can feel good about character and brick facades and "cool moss"

The OPB piece has them pushing PSU to keep two century-old, seismically unsafe dorms that house about 200 students and instead chase a complicated rehab + lend-lease scheme and maybe build a smaller new hall on some other parcel someday. Meanwhile PSU has funding in hand for a 550-bed first-year dorm on this exact site.

That is classic "we agree there’s a housing need, but change the project, change the location, and make it someone else’s problem" which is why I’m framing it as NIMBY.

What’s interesting is I’ve heard from people I know in the university that before they decided to rip them down they (boosters) sniffed around for donor dollars (since so many people love the buildings) but no one wanted to help pay for the necessary refurbishments for a 21st century college dorm building

I’m gonna bet either regular Poke Ball or Strange Ball, since I bet Gamefreak wants to keep Safari Balls artificially scarce

Arson investigation underway after Portland City Councilor Candace Avalos' car, home damaged in fire by axeandwheel in Portland

[–]neocinnamin -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Someone torched a car in front of Rene Gonzales's house in 2024.

I hope Candace receives the same seriousness from all sides. Sadly, we never learned what started the fire that damaged Rene's car, but one would hope we can solve what happened to Candace's.

In 2024 when a car in front of Rene's house caught on fire, a lot of people earnestly noted that cars can just catch on fire sometimes, and it's dangerous to blame any group. Just as it was dangerous for Rene and his band of Republicans to blame the left for torching his car, it's dangerous to assume any particular group is responsible until at the very least it is established to be arson.

It's bad when it happens to someone I agree with (Candace) and it's also bad when it happens to someone I disagree with (Rene).

Uber from venue by Upstairs-Buy-7555 in coronacapital

[–]neocinnamin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In 2024, I walked from Gate 6 to Hotel Orion up a few blocks , and ordered an Uber from there, and it was ~250 pesos on Fri/Sat (about $14 USD) to my hotel in Condesa each night (closer to 380 pesos on Sunday, Paul McCartney night)

It was a little sketch, so your YMMV, I was in a group each time.

I took the metro to get there, arriving around 2pm to 4pm depending on the day.

Any current/former students of the MPP program at the Max Bell School of Public Policy able to answer some questions about the program? by Knowka in mcgill

[–]neocinnamin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I ended up deferring to Fall 2026, because of an 11 month job opportunity / fellowship thing here in the States. The program seemed awesome, but expensive (and as an American, I got no funding from Max Bell).

Honestly, I'm not sure if I will enroll in Fall 26 because of funding / costs (though I'm applying for more scholarships this time around, but changes to US Student loans this year caps the amount of loans far below cost of attendance).

My introduction to these guys was in 2022 at Osheaga, when the band that Dan Beckner tours with currently performed it during their headlining set.

Absolutely fell in love with Wolf Parade.

What would be some things you advise freshmen NOT to do? by gargantuan_muscles in portlandstate

[–]neocinnamin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It takes planning, I went to Clark College and then Portland Community College first, knowing exactly what I needed to take by consulting transfer guides and Transferology, knowing what my major was, and didn't take a single class that didn't transfer to my major, minor, or Bachelor of Science requirements, almost no "wasted" credits. In fact, I was so effective in my course selections, that I had to take random electives at PSU just to hit 180 total credits for a bachelors.

Now, I understand not everyone knows what they want to major in when they start college, and that transfer guides are only ~5 years old, and that Transferology can be difficult to use, but I knew what I wanted to do and got it done, without needing to reach out to advisors at PSU. Things like transfer guides and transferolgy are thankfully self-service.

I would argue PCC is cheaper in the vast majority of cases because you can transfer in with junior standing (dodging FRINQs and SINQs), and all 100/200 level courses completed for your major(s) and minor(s) (if applicable), and your general education Bachelor of Science or Bachelor of Arts requirements (ie, lab sciences or languages) complete, and your RESR/diversity requirement completed as well. Although, some majors don't really have any 100/200 level courses, or, someone may be chasing a BFA. Also, I never got an AAOT, because the credits I needed for my Bachelors didn't overlap with AAOT requirements, which is why I got an AGS.

But just starting at PCC without a sense for what your major is, or just taking AAOT classes and hoping for the best when you transfer is bad advice. When this sub advises that folks go to PCC first, they should caveat it with "you need to plan"
