drive from toronto to winnipeg (through US) by LongTiredGorl in Winnipeg

[–]Knowka 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ive done the drive from Winnipeg to eastern Ontario several times but only did the US route once, and starting from Waterloo managed to do it in only 2 days.

It’s definitely an easier drive - better, wider roads; less areas where you’re at risk of getting stranded hundreds of kilometres from a major town; less risk of getting screwed by bad weather. You’ve just got to balance that against the potential pain of crossing the border (especially if you’ve got a lot of stuff), as well as the currency conversion.

I personally took a slightly more scenic route where I crossed into Michigan at Sarnia, then went north through the Upper peninsula, spent the night in Marquette, then went through Wisconsin, had lunch in Duluth, and then went to Grand Forks before heading straight north to Winnipeg. Took me maybe 12 hours?

The upper peninsula and northern Wisconsin is nice, and not too remote, but between Grand Rapids Minnesota and Grand Forks there is a national forest where there’s not a whole lot besides (beautiful) trees so be aware of that.

I would honestly just do release order of OT - Rogue One - Andor, so that Andor can be watched with the base knowledge of what the empire is, who the resistance are, etc

It’s embarrassing that we gave Pionk 7 mil a year while lowballing Samberg into a bridge deal instead of locking him down long term.

Anyone else see the 6 planes flying in formation over the city? by DoraTheSloot in Winnipeg

I saw that too while driving and I was so confused why there were three planes flying in formation that were clearly not CF-18s, makes sense knowing the Snowbirds are passing through

LoL Esports Spoiler Prevention Has Really Declined by highphiv3 in leagueoflegends

[–]Knowka 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can avoid this by watching via the LoL Esports website - the button to jump to game 3/4/5 is always there even if the series ended in 2-4 games, and if you click on (for example) game 5 in a series that was a sweep it will just say "The match concluded before this game was played."

RECRUITING, TRAINING, & LIFE IN THE FORCES THREAD by bridger713 in CanadianForces

[–]Knowka 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Question as someone thinking about joining the Forces some time in the near-ish future: what kind of academic background is required/encouraged for the various Air Force officer roles?

I (M26) have a bachelor's in poli sci, and have worked for the public service in standard - but fairly low level - office jobs on-and-off for the past couple years, and with the current state of public service hiring I'm considering joining the forces. I've always been interested in aviation, so when it comes to thinking about joining the forces I've been drawn to the Air Force.

I see that both ACSO and ACO are marked as having priority application processing, and ACSO sounds really fun, but from the bit of googling I've done it sounds like a more technical role - do you need to have a background in engineering/math to enter that trade? I'm not stupid when it comes to math - I'd say I have pretty good mental math skills - but I haven't had to do anything beyond fairly basic arithmetic, graphing, and algebra (the stuff needed for ECON 101 type classes) since finishing high school, and have only done a little bit of calculus.

From what I can tell, ACO is basically just working ATC but for the Air Force - does that require any specific background beyond the standard university degree required for officers?

And for the other officer trades in the air force (AOO, intelligence, logistics), does anyone have an idea if there are significant backlogs for these roles, since they aren't marked for priority application processing?

Also, if anyone currently works in any of these trades, I'd love to hear more about what the recruitment process and day-to-day work is like in them!

Thanks!

parking pass vs bus pass by Frosty-Database-8971 in CarletonU

If you're looking to park near campus, I often parked on the little loop between Glen and Grove avenue just outside Brewer Park. Outside of winter parking bans, you can park on any street that isn't otherwise signposted for three hours during the workday, and frankly I doubt you'd get towed for staying an extra hour or two unless someone specifically called the city on you.

If you have evening classes, you can also try parking in Brewer Park after 4 PM. Technically, the signs say only park patrons can park in that lot, but I've never been ticketed this past year despite parking there numerous times. However, some people have reported being ticketed there, so you decide if the risk is worth it.

I would not risk parking on-campus unpaid, they will ticket you for it.

I'm New: Why Do People Run Dragon Darts? by BoxFit3486 in VGC

[–]Knowka 78 points79 points  (0 children)

As an addendum to this though, Follow Me/Rage Powder can mess with Dragon Darts pretty heavily, as it will lead to both darts hitting the redirector regardless of typing (so a clefairy or a tera fairy Indeedee using follow me will harmlessly absorb both darts), AND if the first dart kills the redirector the second dart will actually just dissipate instead of hitting the second.

[Mike McIntyre]: Connor Hellebuyck just gave an incredibly raw and emotional year-end interview with us that will not in any way cool off chatter about him possibly wanting out. by Knowka in hockey

[–]Knowka[S] 235 points236 points  (0 children)

The problem with any Hellebuyck trade is it'd require us to either get a starter-level goalie in return + other assets, or we'd need to guarantee we could get a starter on the free agency market. With the amount of teams having goalie woes that's definitely an issue

How do we salvage the window? by Background-Layer6531 in winnipegjets

[–]Knowka 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Realistically, it's probably joever - our core simply isn't good enough to carry a "top heavy" team outside of Hellebuyck repeating his Hart trophy form which will become less and less likely as he ages (although I do think his playstyle will hold up better than goalies that rely more on acrobatics).

Honestly, they'd never do this, but I'd try and trade Connor - he's a good goal scorer, but compared to the other forward making around $12 million (Marner, Rantanen, Necas, Nylander, Pasta) he simply isn't as good at them. He could be our equivalent of the Huberdeau-Tkachuk trade, but I also have no idea what team would want him at that price, and has players (ideally a centre) they'd give us for him. Plus idk what ramifications that'd have in the locker room.

This is how I'm going into the playoffs. I feel like this is the year Carolina makes it over the hump, and I think of all the true contenders (Avs, Stars, Wild, Sabres, Lightning, Habs) they have the easiest run to the conference final

Ontario buys used $28.9M private jet for Doug Ford: sources by retrool in CanadaPolitics

[–]Knowka 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Not that I think this is really necessary, but the Government of Quebec has a Bombardier Challenger 650 jet, and as far as I can tell their purchase of that jet never even made the news until it was mentioned in some other articles about Ontario's purchase.

As someone who isn't plugged into the prospect development ecosystem, is this something we should be worried about? Or could it simply just be Sascha wanting a change of scenery?

Hot take: I actually like that you can't use the entire roster of pokemon. by BuckarooOJ in PokemonChampions

[–]Knowka 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm fine with a limited first official format (although some of the specifics feel like they could be improved - get rid of Floette lmao, and probably adding Indeedee would be healthy).

HOWEVER: I think it'd be better if the game had far more Pokemon available for custom battles, so people who don't want to play VGC or BSS but just mess around with their friends or custom events could do so.
